Sad, melancholic, depressive music

So, I'm a big fan of sad songs, because I think sadness is one of the most powerful feeling there is, and music with a lot of feeling is just plain beautiful to me.
But sadly enough, I don't know that many bands who make that kind of music that I really like. I really like Radiohead, and Placebo, Sophia (acoustic with vocals) , Three days grace ( so-so, I'm a bit outgrowing that kind of music) , Bon Iver, Damien Rice, Love like birds, I will I swear (both kinda slow music with piano and beautiful vocals)

Music that is only instrumental can be very beautiful, like for example Ludovico einaudi which I really like, and Yann Tiersen. But there's also lots of other bands in that genre of music that is too long and sounds slow for me. So giving me bands who make music with vocals would be safer maybe.
I know that this is hard to explain and that everyone has another idea of what slow music is. But I can only try.

I don't like metal most of the time, so black metal is not the stuff I am talking about. Psychedelic rock like Radiohead would be good, or beautiful piano music with maybe a violin (Such a beautiful instrument) and vocals ofcourse.
I am also a big fan of acoustic guitar. And I like the band Lamb, they actually make some sad songs. That's why Trip hop is welcome.

Hope you guys can help me. Apologies for the bad english. ;)
(I put this topic in the category "Indie & alternative" because I mostly like alternative bands, so alternative bands who make depressive songs are always welcome)

Ummm....like start with Elliot Smith, Jason Molina and Bonnie Princebilly and work way forward.
Or start further back with Nick Drake, and if your alive in the am I'll let you listen to Elvis Depressdly.

Exo 06-24-2015 07:22 PM

Listen to Sun Kil Moon - Benji. That should kill you for a few days.

RoxyRollah 06-24-2015 07:26 PM

Sssh...I was saving those.

Janszoon 06-24-2015 08:48 PM

It's pretty hard to beat Bohren & der Club of Gore when it comes to melancholy instrumental music:

Giles Corey
Hospice by The Antlers
Put your Back N 2 it by Perfume Genius
Deathconsciousness by Have a Nice Life is pretty heartbreaking

Hey everyone! I'm new here. Is there a welcome post I should be adding too before I post here? I made a Melancholy playlist on Spotify, but I'm not allowed to post links yet. Haha. Maybe I could DM the address? I will list some of the bands from the playlist. I also love sad music, but I have make sure I don't listen too much.

I agree with Janszoon on Bohren & der Club of Gore! Very moody/dark jazz.

- We Were Jids by Melpo Mene
- Daydream by Tycho
- My Will is Good by Port O'Brien
- Payable to Finder by Paper Rival
- My World by Lovedrug
- Skeleton Key by Margot & The Nuclear So and So's

Thanks! I wasn't sure if there was a specific introduction post inside of the indie section or if it was only the main one.

Nice, a fellow felt mountaineer. This album is underappreciated.

People like to compare Felt Mountain to Portishead but I think Goldfrapp was on a totally different level. What an amazing concept album. 10/10, from the beginning to the end... such an amaznig mix of trip-hop, baroque pop, ambient, and very faint synthpop/dream pop influences. I don't think I've ever heard an album that has had such an aesthetic point of view. They knew exactly what they wanted to do. They knew exactly what kind of vibe they wanted to portray.

I love the contrast between Felt Mountain and Black Cherry. Honestly, it isn't what I would have done. I would have delved further into the dark, visceral, underlying, brooding chaos that littered Felt Mountain, but the contrast is amazing when you look at the lyrics and the music videos.

Felt Mountain is all about isolation, sexual obsession, sexual frustration and repression and unrequited love, and being consumed by the shame and the dissatisfaction... There's a certain guilty perversion to the entire album but it's expressed so eloquently. It's starry eyed but it's also wise beyond its years. It's like a fourteen year old girl applying "too much" makeup and smoking a cigarette. It's just so wrong, and it's ashamed of it, and then they release Black Cherry, and it's one of the biggest contrasts I've ever heard in music, and it's a contrast in every conceivable way.

It's really like a yin and yang thing. It's all hypersexualization, but Black Cherry is when she transcends her shame and uses her sexuality to empower herself, to make herself feel beautiful, and that is expressed not only lyrically, but visually, and aesthetically as well.

Black Cherry really disappointed me, just because it's not my style of music at all. It's probably good... Dunno.
On the other hand I can't imagine how they could have developed their previous sound further, so in a way this change certainly commands much more respect than a lame attempt to replicate the first one would have.

grtwhtgrvty 06-27-2015 12:43 PM

It disappointed me too. I just really liked the contrast. They definitely could've branched off with their other style by going way more experimental.

Golden Lights 06-28-2015 12:25 PM

I think that in the field of indie music the saddish band would be The Neighborhood especially the song "Baby came home today"

RedRose 07-07-2015 04:47 AM

I want your opinion in a song named: "Down the Spiral: I Invented God".
It is for an amateur band, so don't be harsh. But it can be very depressive, I donnow. :)

I would say check out James Blake's self titled and Overgrown albums. Slow moving nocturnal depressing goodness. Very atmospheric, really interesting composition.

And then Burial's Untrue is a great album as well. Really surprising use of samples.

Just stuff you can just put on and then stare at a wall for an hour while reevaluating your life.

Y'know..funtimes...

Youth Lagoon can make me feel pretty sad sometimes. The song 17 gets me. Also Roxy Rollah mentioned Elvis Depressedly, Hotter Sadness is my favorite by Elvis. I really like the driving drums and simple guitar setup.

What songs do you like Roxy?

mybloody84 08-14-2015 02:08 PM

Father Time by Nathan John

Watzoriginal 08-14-2015 07:49 PM

Depressing is one thing you can call my music , my whole lifes been a great big song. I let my emotions out in my music.

Wharrior 08-15-2015 06:44 PM

Well it doesn't get much more depressing than Radiohead, but Lera Lynn's music on True detective is pretty maudlin.

RoxyRollah 08-15-2015 07:22 PM

Um there is waaaasy more depressing bands besides Radiohead.

disarmingvoid 10-12-2015 06:15 PM

Listen to Chelsea Wolfe's album "Unknown Rooms"
Listen to old stuff by Bright Eyes. Elliott Smith is also a big MUST.
There's this Mexican band called Ampersan. Look for their song called "Colores". Super sad. Also "Why Can't You Just Be Happy" by Renee Goust. Leonard Cohen has some pretty sad songs, too.

bydavidrosen 11-22-2015 08:45 PM

Start listening to Ryan Adams but be careful... It's a deep, deep hole to get into. And of course, The Cure.
