If I am new to the whole genre of trip hop, where should I start? Portishead, Massive Attack, I think I know a few more but am not sure if they are actually trip hop. Like if you could give me 3 - 5 albums of trip hop, what should I start with?

LoathsomePete 03-16-2010 06:56 PM

Dummy - Portishead
Mezzanine - Massive Attack
Sampler: Volume One - Cinephile
Maxinquaye - Tricky
Charango - Morcheeba

If you need any help acquiring them just ask.

About the whole trip hop genre thing, perhaps you should check out Archive, You Look All The Same To Me is a great album to get started on them.

I'd like to check those out (with the exception of Portishead), some help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the recommendations. I've heard of all of them except Cinephile and Morcheeba. And from reading through this thread, it seems like I can't go wrong with any of the albums by Portishead.?

Oh, and yeah I love Endtroducing.

I wish trip hop became a much more prominent kind of music than what ended up happening! I love the sound and feel of many of the artists and bands....Portishead being my absolute favorite. I'll never forget the 1st time I heard 1 of their songs....shiver....

The problem was how prominent it became, inspiring a wave of copycats.Any innovation will be followed by a legion of lesser imitators.

Just listened to "Glory Box" and "Only You". I liked both. Maybe I should find a copy of Dummy and give them a proper listen.

Yep you really should.

Yeah, I can't recommend Dummy enough. Beyond brilliant.

Anyone seen Portishead live? Are they mindblowingly good?

Tickets are $50, which I feel is too much, unless they're one of those "don't miss your chance" shows...

I would love to see Portishead live but that does seem a bit steep but if it's it in a relatively small venue then I would be very tempted. They are not exactly prolific whether it is performing live or album releases so I say catch them whilst you can!

noise 10-13-2011 07:26 PM

6500 capacity venue. Not very intimate :(

Freebase Dali 10-13-2011 11:13 PM

I'd love to see them myself, but I definitely wouldn't see them at a large venue, unless you have really, really good seats or placement... but even then, the atmosphere would be different. To me, they're definitely a small-venue kind of enjoyment (I would imagine).

not really a huge fan

was good when they first appeared

3rd is my fave

Surell 10-14-2011 08:51 AM

I love the song Glorybox by them, is this what i can expect if i look deeper?

Howard the Duck 10-14-2011 10:17 AM

^^the 1st and 2nd album has pretty much the same vibe

3rd sounds a bit different

Paedantic Basterd 10-14-2011 11:30 AM

Third is one of my favourite albums. I think I would pay $50 to see Portishead, and camp out all day for a good spot.

I wouldn't really say their first two albums have the same vibe. Their self-titled seems a bit darker and more tense than the late-night sultry vibes of Dummy.

:)

I heard that they were going to follow Third up pretty damn quickly and not have the huge gap between the 2nd and third albums but it doesn't seem like this is the case :( Geoff Barrow provided the incidental music for the Banksy doc Exit Through The Gift Shop recently so there is still music being made but I reckon it will be a couple of years yet before we get any new material.

William_the_Bloody 06-17-2013 09:32 PM

Yes still no new Portishead material on the arisen yet, but here is a band that took 11 years to put out there third album...so I'm not hopeful, Beth Gibbsons is currently off producing a solo album.

I must say Portishead that it's expensive to go see Portishead live, but it's worth every cent. They chalkfilled with talent and put the money towards really good audio equipment. One of the best live acts I've ever seen.

semiartificial 06-18-2013 08:01 AM

Intense live ... maybe not so in a big arena though
