Portishead

Looking for a Portishead thread? Well, here it is.

Trip hop excellence, beautiful vocals, the music is like erotic sex, except I'm having it. Go out and grab Dummy, a must in your collection.

Song recommendations:
Only You
Glorybox
Sour Times
Wandering Star
Over
Beautiful

Roads
Numb
=)

puddin 08-19-2005 11:11 PM

I love their music but the singer pisses me off so i don't listen to them much.
Dummy's a great album if you can stand the singer.

THE INTERNET 08-20-2005 06:13 AM

Despite not having any feelings or libido, I must state Beth Gibbon can punch
I's keys anytime. Allthough here solo stuff:

Sneer 08-21-2005 07:16 AM

dummy is right up there with mezzanine and endtroducing.

SATCHMO 08-21-2005 02:51 PM

Someone mentioned something, a while back in another thread, about the song Roads being the perfect "driving at night in the rain" song - something like that. Does anyone remember? I'd just have to say I agree completely.

hookers with machineguns 08-21-2005 03:58 PM

^ Yeah I remember that, but I think we were talking about a different song. Either way, works.

Someone keep me updated on when/if Portishead releases any new material. Thanks.

Musicologist 11-16-2005 03:18 PM

When is the new Portishead coming, if there even if one EVER coming out again?

dirt mcgirt 11-16-2005 06:54 PM

IndiElectronica 11-17-2005 03:43 AM

was just talking about this band 2 days ago... My glasto mix this year (the cd mix I take with me) had all trip-hop on it and everyone liked it. Kosheen, Morcheeba, Kruder & Dorfmeister etc... (and of course Portishead)

reefermonkey 11-17-2005 07:39 AM

The first release from the upcoming full length Jasta Division album. "Into The Blue" has a haunting, ethereal sound with hints of Portishead, Led Zepplin, Radiohead and Pink Floyd. Dim the lights, spark up... the incense, kick back, and enjoy drifting off "Into The Blue" with one of Fiberline's hottest new acts - Jasta Division.

Hope you enjoy this tune as much as I do!

Decoy 12-16-2005 04:32 AM

best Trip Hop group, ever. Andy also threw down the best hip-hop set i have ever seen live.

O'Bannion 03-08-2008 07:17 AM

New album is pretty sweet so far.

jackhammer 03-08-2008 02:12 PM

I cant wait to hear that cough cough.

c64 03-08-2008 06:04 PM

the new album seems like a failed attempt. meshing opposing sounds together keeps the 1st listening interesting, but the following times through bored me to tears. there is so much repetition; it makes me wonder how quickly did they write this album. i'm really hoping what has leaked are the b-sides and something bigger and more thoughtful is about to come forth.

Links to the leak on my blog.

I've decided Portishead are probably second only to Radiohead in my favourite British acts of the last 15 years. Every single album they've made has been stunning, granted that figure currently only stands at 3 but hey.

This song to me is near perfection

I have trouble when it comes to Portishead and deciding what from them I like best. Third and Dummy are so ridiculously good and yet so different. And then sometimes I like the S/T better than Dummy. Regardless, what I notice with Portishead is that no matter which album it is, they all are full of hidden gems that really take a few listens to pick up on.

Harry 12-20-2009 11:18 PM

Portishead, honestly, aside from whoever the girl is in the Decemberist's new album Hazards of Love and Kimya Dawson, has to be the only female vocalist I actually enjoy. Oh and that does not include my love of opera. Okay, so there's a few... but Portishead is up there.

dac 12-21-2009 06:33 PM

New Song :D

I love it. Definitely has a post punk vibe to it.

How many have you listened to?

Anybody heard this? Rustin Man is Paul Webb from Talk Talk which would suggest an atmospheric electronic album but it's mainly acoustic. Still not sure whether I actually like it.

I don't know? Regardless, Portishead is one of the few I like. There's no argument on my opinion, there.

ElephantSack 12-24-2009 04:57 PM

I was introduced to Portishead through a girl that we were giving a ride home to in Colorado (about a 2,000 mile trek from where I live). She put on the live in NYC album at about 5 A.M. as we were closing in on Denver. I gotta admit, it was fuckin' great. I'm a fan.

The album is a bit hit and miss for me... Some songs are just kinda meh, while the good songs are really, really good.

See:

PhantomandaFly 12-26-2009 02:49 PM

Beth Gibbons is good, however I dont know how you can't find more female vocalists you like. Ever listened to Eisley? They're really amazing.

LeDiz 12-28-2009 11:39 AM

I absolutely LOVE them.

One day I saw trailer for "In The Cut (quite underrated movie IMO) and heard Glory Box as part of it's soundtrack. I thought to myself, "Oh My God. This has to be one of the most erotic songs I've EVER heard." In the following days I've spent time gathering their discography and only marveled as I listened more. Beth Gibbons is great vocalist!

"Dummy" is still my favorite album of theirs. :)

NumberNineDream 12-28-2009 12:48 PM

I really need a recommendation ... any albums I should listen to first?

If you're entirely new to the genre of trip hop, their latest, 3rd, might be a bit more accessable to you, but I'd say start from the beginning and grab Dummy.

NumberNineDream 12-28-2009 09:42 PM

I'm actually a fan of trip hop, don't know much about it, but I enjoy it immensly... getting Dummy right away.

So from there, I continue chronologically?

dac 12-29-2009 06:41 PM

Yessir... There's only 3 albums total plus a live album. The live album really helps bring a lot together once you've heard the first two, so maybe give that a shot as well. '3rd' was the best album of 08' in my opinion, so maybe that gives you something to look forward to as well. Hope you like it all!

duga 12-30-2009 12:33 AM

and what a live album it was...i loved it. their music went perfectly with the new york philharmonic

Dr.Seussicide 12-30-2009 12:45 AM

I'm addicted to machinegun. One of their best songs :)

I believe you when you say "addicted", over your 100th listen of the song today or not yet?

Haha, just about :P

Start at their album - "Third"

Sneer 01-04-2010 01:12 PM

Can't lose with any of them, they're all fantastic.

The Fascinating Turnip 03-16-2010 04:33 PM

Well there's no reason for this to remain dead, is there?
I've recently acquired Dummy, and it's damn good.
