If I am new to the whole genre of trip hop, where should I start? Portishead, Massive Attack, I think I know a few more but am not sure if they are actually trip hop. Like if you could give me 3 - 5 albums of trip hop, what should I start with?

Dummy - Portishead
Mezzanine - Massive Attack
Sampler: Volume One - Cinephile
Maxinquaye - Tricky
Charango - Morcheeba

If you need any help acquiring them just ask.

About the whole trip hop genre thing, perhaps you should check out Archive, You Look All The Same To Me is a great album to get started on them.

I'd like to check those out (with the exception of Portishead), some help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the recommendations. I've heard of all of them except Cinephile and Morcheeba. And from reading through this thread, it seems like I can't go wrong with any of the albums by Portishead.?

Oh, and yeah I love Endtroducing.

I wish trip hop became a much more prominent kind of music than what ended up happening! I love the sound and feel of many of the artists and bands....Portishead being my absolute favorite. I'll never forget the 1st time I heard 1 of their songs....shiver....

The problem was how prominent it became, inspiring a wave of copycats.Any innovation will be followed by a legion of lesser imitators.

Just listened to "Glory Box" and "Only You". I liked both. Maybe I should find a copy of Dummy and give them a proper listen.

Yeah, I can't recommend Dummy enough. Beyond brilliant.

Anyone seen Portishead live? Are they mindblowingly good?

Tickets are $50, which I feel is too much, unless they're one of those "don't miss your chance" shows...
