Yay Flaming Lips! I still think Yoshimi is the best
I have 2 of their albums - CTM and YBTPR
Clouds Taste Metallic is fantastic, all great songs. Yoshimi has some good songs, but too much filler. Overrated. Oh and I saw them live recently, it was without doubt the best show I've ever been at. Such a surreal, amazing atmosphere and lots of great, trippy effects (lasers, screens and such). Awesome night. |
White Lies - you should get The Soft Bulletin, it's probably in between the two. It's my fave album of the many they've done (though I could never be bothered to shell out for Zaireeka). The latest album is OK but not great.

So...yeah. The Soft Bulletin...err... if you don't have it, get it. |
Thanks guys, I'll check it out.
I saw their show with Sonic youth. The music videos the had on a projector added alot to their show, and the music was decent (they did one hell of a "War Pig's" cover to end it) but i really wasn't all that impressed with their music. I had listened to their music before and not really liked it too much; seing them live helped but they relied on stage gimmicks a bit too much, although it did add a lot of energy. Good band, though in my opinion not great.
Of course, I love sonic youth and sonic youth played right before them so... Maybe that was it. Do you realize is probably my favorite song of theirs, that or yoshimei. |
My sister was a weird fan of music..I dont like calling anyones taste in music s*hitty cause who the f*uck am I but..she like these guys and Tripping Daisy..who I saw live when I saw Def Leopard a few years ago...anyways...my sister was on Acid one night and decided I would be her "cruiser" so I drover her around and she played the album..I dont remember but the song "She dont use Jelly" was on it...what a trip.
I was going to see them last year when they were playing the At War With the Mystics shows but I came down with the worst flu Ive ever had in my life a few days before the show so my dad went in my place.:(
"Pompeii Am Götterdämmerung" and "The Sound Of Failure / It's Dark...Is It Always This Dark??" are absolutely jaw dropping.
Oh how I look forward to seeing this band live. After seeing videos of him going on stage by rolling over the crowd in a plastic bubble and then having the band/extras dressed up as animals...I can't wait.
I really need to get more of their stuff- I only have YOSHIMI, which I think is brilliant, but somehow I have never followed up on them. Too many bands, not enough time.
Anyone recommend their best albums? |
Transmissions From The Satellite Heart is a good one , that was kinda their breakthrough album in the early 90s.
The Soft Bulletin was kind of more mellow than what they did before and is probably the closest in sound to Yoshimi. Most of their 80s albums were totally mental , if you want to check any of those out I think Telepathic Surgery is the best. |
Incredible band live. I wasn't really a fan until I saw them at a late night show at Bonnaroo. They are making a repeat this year, I can't wait!
I need to see them live.
The 'soft bulletin pwns' so does 'transmissions from the..'. I wasn't that over chuffed with 'At war with the mystics' though. |
I have listened to zaireeka the correct way. it is the ****. ive never heard something quite like it. its spectacular.
now its easily downloadable through torrents. now what i want is a version you can listen to on an ipod... a combining of all 4 cds... i dont have an audio program to do it, but someone should, then upload it to mediafire or something. but dont just listen to that, it still wouldnt be anywhere near as great as pumping up 4 stereos... sounds coming from everywhere.... |
bad ass live show, pretty decent band.. definetly a FUN listen.
Is the band name connected to thrush in anyway?
I think it's something to do with the huge amounts of acid they used to consume in the early/mid 80s.
Near enough.
i believe the flaming lips refers to VAGINA LIPS
So my idea of thrush was correct ^^
I just heard their cover of "Life on Mars," thats a fun one to get through.

I'm dying to hear that. |

Here you are sir |
I can't decide if like The Soft Bulletin or Yoshimi better.
I've decided on the Soft Bulletin, i'm kind of disappointed by At War with the Mystics so far.
Could someone recommend an album or two to start with? I haven't heard that much from them, but the couple of songs I did I liked. You all know what I generally like, so any help would be cool.
Yoshimi.
^ I agree even if everyone is going to tell you Soft Bulletin, there are other albums I like but probably wouldn't recommend them to the uninitiated. So - download "She Don't Use Jelly" instead if you're interested in their mid career. Don't bother with their early career unless you also happen to be a big fan of 80's american underground noise rock (butthole surfers).
supreme bump
And does someone have a copy of Telepathic Surgery? *wink wink* |
I love them. In a priest driven ambulance and hit to death... are highly underrated imo.
I still can't decide whether I like Transmissions or Clouds more. Great albums, surprised they did not get a lot of recognition.
has anyone seen their christmas on mars movie? It looks pants. Their live schtick makes up for it though.
I have 'Hit to Death in the Future Head' and 'Yoshimi..' (always been more partial to the former). Any recommendations which album to check next? there are too many :s |
Transmissions is definitely their standout album but Soft Bulletin and Clouds Taste Metallic are great as well.
^^safe, i'm there.
i wasn't being sarcastic about their live show either, i was waiting for radiohead at glasto 2003 and accidentally ended up in the thick of their infamous vibe, never seen so many people smiling. 'she don't use jelly' was the highlight :D- |
Could someone please pm me a good lips album to start with?

If i was a first time listener i would go with Yoshimi Battles, It has probably their most famous song and you can listen to it from beginning to end. It's def one of my favorite albums.

1. 1983-1990, early lazy distorted avantgarde stuff that is mediocre, some people like it though 2. 1990-1995, more melody based colorful arrangements, but still a lot of distortion (this is the Jones era) 3. 1997- today, where they got a bit more accessible and abandoning most distortion. A lot of lush arrangements and interesting sounds. |
