I've seen wayne coyne around OKC A few times. A friend of mine sat next to him at the movies.
|
I really, really like what I've heard of Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, but for some reason I keep forgetting to listen to the whole thing.
...I should probably get on that. |

Haven't gotten into them too much yet; tracks 5-8 on Yoshimi are pretty fantastic though.

Has anyone here heard Zaireeka?
I just downloaded all 4 discs and merged them together using Garageband and it sounds incredible. "Riding to Work in the Year 2025 (Your Invisible Now)" might be my favourite Flaming Lips song ever. |

I saw them live at the San Diego County fair and they were terrific!
While we were waiting for them to play their first song, they had a silhouette of a girl projected on their set with a huge dark oval pulsing where her vagina would be. So hilarious! I got beer spilled on me though :( |

The album is all weird and all over the place so it's not so easy to tell, but it sounds good to me. |
Gave it a listen, gave up half way through. Sounds pretty user-unfriendly to me. I guess I'll just stick to Yoshimi for the foreseeable future...
|
Soft Bulletin is them at a peak methinks...

and Fight Test. Thinking about it, that's probably one of my favourite albums of this decade.
|
My top 5 Flaming Lips albums is
01. Clouds Taste Metallic 02. The Soft Bulletin 03. Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots 04. Zaireeka 05. Embryonic |
Yoshimi is my favorite album, but the Gash is probably my favorite song (on soft bulletin)
|
So what does everyone think of embryonic? I love it, very dense and sprawling and certainly less commercial than their last few. Most experimental since Zaireeka i reckon. very impresseive.
|
Only half way through Embryonic but I'm very impressed. I always find TFL hit or miss, love a lot of their older stuff but wasn't much of a fan of some of the chirpy and recent stuff. There's a lot going on here and like someone above said, a little more experimental and out there, but still maintaining a few nice traditional tracks and lyrics.
|
What is the best album to get after The Soft Bulletin? I really love TSB but I don't know what to get next.

^^ Thanks man. I'll download it when I get a chance. What is your favorite?

Out of their earlier (pre-Soft Bulletin) material, I'd recommend:
Clouds Taste Metallic Basically where the 'modern' Flaming Lips sound begins. Still traces of their Garage/Indie sound of earlier albums, but much more melodic, varied and 'widescreen' than before. Basically a more lo-fi Soft Bulletin, and my personal favourite of theirs. Zaireeka A real bitch to listen to properly (comes in 4 discs that need to be played simultaneously) - or you can do what I did and use a music program to merge the 4 discs together. This came out before Soft Bulletin, but in terms of sound it fits more accurately between SB and Yoshimi. Another excellent album. In terms of pre-Clouds Taste Metallic material, there isn't a massive difference between many of the albums (although they're still all decent). They sound very much like Pixies on these albums, though never as brilliant as Pixies. Of these albums, I'd say feel free to choose between: Hit To Death In The Future Head Transmissions From The Satellite Heart In A Priest Driven Ambulance |
Zaireeka sounds like quite a project. I will get it, one day!
|
Really liking the whole thing, had a couple of full listens now.
Convinced of the Hex, See The Leaves, Powerless and The Ego's Last Stand have grabbed me so far, but there's not really a weak track in my opinion. Great stuff! Quote:

I only downloaded them after figuring out I could merge them, so I've never given them a listen individually - though there is one track (track 6 I think) that seemingly consists of one track of music, and 3 of high-pitched noise (like the song Ventolin by Aphex Twin) - I edited the other 3 tracks out and the song sounds perfect. Apparently you can listen to different combinations discs and the tracks sound different (but still good), e.g. listening to 3 discs instead of 4 will be a different but still enjoyable listen. Dunno if that's true though.

As far as Lips go IMO
Transmissions From The Satelleite Heart=awesome Soft Bulletin=first 3 are good, not so sure after that Yoshimi=couple of good singles, some daft stuff At War With The Mystics=crap. May give Embyronic a listen. |

Here is a good article on the album. Wayne talks a bit about how it came about.
I can't post articles I guess, but go to quietus .com and the put this after the .com: /articles/02818-the-flaming-lips-embryonic-track-by-track-review-and-wayne-coyne-interview |
The new album is fantastic, much better than At War With The Mystics. I've still yet to see these live, but I got my tickets delivered yesterday to see them on 16th November. Its going to be my gig of the year without a doubt. :D

Well, I love Embryonic. I can certainly say it's my favorite album by them. It's a very new sound for them, and considering their last 10 years of releases, completely unexpected. I have to say, I'm on my third listen right now, and it's getting better as I listen to each part of the music and grasp what's going on fully. Also, it should be noticed this is a very, very dark album for the Lips, much more than any of their previous releases. Even upbeat songs (Gemini Syringes) have a sound that is strangely foreboding and ready to return to the darkness, a lot like much of Pink Floyd's catalog. Fantastic album though and it may take my spot for album of the year and the best of their discography. I think I'd be in a huge minority saying that though.
By the way, I have yet to hear Zaireeka properly because I have no idea how to do it, and if anyone could get me a link of the merged tracks I would be forever in your debt. In fact, anyone want to trade that for Embryonic? |
Embryonic Party!
