One from the vaults. For a few years, I was the caretaker of an Argentinian chaco tortoise which had been smuggled into the United States in an airplane carry-on.

It was owned by a go**amn hippy I mistakenly dated for 7 years. The tortoise was named Astor Piazzolla and lived in a 6-foot kiddie pool filled with pet litter and heat lamps on the living room floor of our already cramped (and already sweltering) apartment just outside NYC.

Ever try to walk a tortoise?

Closest thing I've had to a pet in my adult life.

No, dogs are mindlessly needy. Cats, even when they are craving your attention, are bat**** crazy and keep you on your toes. No dog has ever bitten me HARD cause they loved me so much.

EDIT: They also delight in destruction. As a drama mall goth teen I had an inexcusable collection of glass goblets. Had is the key word, because I also had a cat. Thankfully, the cat knocked some sense into me and one by one smashed all my stupid goblets and told me to get a job.

I wouldn't trade my cat for anything though. He can meow, he can poop, he can claw me as much as he wants, but I still love him to death.
