Brixton Academy is No.1 IMO, but the new scene is in East London. Look into, Death Disco (for weekly evenings - very very cheap nights), you've got City Showcase Festival (a 4 day festival in East London £5)which I'll be attending to, Camden Crawl (2 day festival in Camden - £70 or so
, but it's totally worth it).
TBH you don't really need too much for a good night out, I guess it depends how much you drink etc..
