Newbie Here

Hi all,
I'm Victoria, 17 years old, from Montreal, and I'm studying to go to Med School. I like Chinese cuisine, snacking, snowboarding, listening to music and having a great time.

I've been lurking here a few weeks and have come to realize that this is a great site for discovering new artists in every genres, and so I thought it would be fun to join the community to discuss music and widen my library.

I've been playing guitar for about 4 years, and now I'm thinking of getting myself a mandolin (just because it sounds so cool on Led Zeppelin songs). My general music taste is fairly varied, I like progressive rock, blues rock and reggae in particular, but I'm open to pretty much any kind of music. I've even learned to appreciate Classical music in the past month, since that's all my brother ever plays in his car!

Well, looking forward to being amazed by all of you music junkies!

Cheers,
Vic

Welcome, hope you stay.

Care to tell us what you have been listening to lately, any bands or albums or whatnot?

snacklover 04-21-2010 02:15 PM

I've been listening to Wu-Tang a lot. Kind of trying to get into Hip-hop, and so I consulted the Rap section of the forum and saw that they were a common favourite. So far, love 'em.

I recently saw Our Lady Peace in concert, so I've been listening to a bit of that too. But apart from that, it's been a compilation of Simon and Garfunkel, Led Zeppelin, The White Stripes, Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, Nirvana, and all the stuff I usually listen to.

Oh, I forgot Bad Brains. I just downloaded their S/T album and I gotta say, it's pretty hardcore :P

I just noticed your avatar, it made me die! Arrested Development is one of my favourite shows!

Haha that simple, huh? You have no idea how high my expectations for the movie are. Hopefully many more classic quotes from Tobias.

Hey that's awesome! I see you're from Ontario, are you Leafs fan?

And thanks for the warm welcome everybody! I really appreciate it :)

Meh. Sort of. I used to follow the Leafs a lot a few years back when I had more time to watch games. I sort of became disinterested in watching them though. I started getting scores and highlights from the paper and the Internet. I was really hoping that a team would be brought to Hamilton, but unfortunately that didn't happen. Oh well, such is life.

So do you want to go to med school in Montreal? My uncle did a pre-med program at the undergraduate level at McGill and then he went on to the University of Montreal to get his MD.

Aw that's too bad. Haha actually I'm not that much of a Habs fan myself, the only time I actually get myself to watch the games is when they hit the playoffs. But even then, I've kind of lost the spirit, what with our entire new team and all. I'm barely following this current season.

I'm really hoping that I make it to Med-P (it's what they call their pre-med program at McGill) but at the rate my grades are going, I think I'll probably have to opt for the longer, alternative route through getting my B.Sc in Science first. I'll have to work my butt off if I ever wanna hope getting a Med-P interview. I met with my academic advisor just today, and she gave me some statistics about the admissions. Out of the 500ish people who apply, they interview about 145 of them, and pick about 80 from those. I still have 2 semesters to go though, so I suppose it's worth trying. The thing is that they ask for a hell of a lot. Not only do you have to have an outstanding R-score, but you gotta be a high-caliber student who's involved in all kinds of clubs and volunteering and whatnot.

Anyway we'll see how it goes. Wish me luck :p

2 semesters of high school? Just work your butt off and you'll be fine. Make sure you get good grades in science, math, and english! Good luck :D

I graduated from high school last year actually, but here we need to do 2 or 3 years in what we call CEGEP, depending on if you're doing a pre-university program or a technical program. And thanks, I'll try my best. :)

How about you, what's your occupation (or program of study), if you don't mind me asking?

Hey Richard, nice to meet you too! I find this forum great so far, it's quite efficient, especially if you're exploring genres you're not familiar with. I don't post often yet though because I try to get informed as much as possible before making any comments. But I hope you find what you're looking for on here!

Right! I forgot about CEGEP. My mom did was enrolled in it for a year after she finished high school, way back when :)

I just finished my second year of university, so I'm back in Toronto for the next 4 months! I'm a music major, I play flute in school. It's hard work! I'd like to be a high school music teacher. Music is generally an elective class for most of high school, so it's not a class that students are forced to take. They might be more motivated because it's something they want to do. I don't really want to teach in Ontario though. Music and arts education is so poorly funded in this province. We'll see what happens though :)

Nice! Haha you know I played the trombone in the high school band for three years? Music classes were the best, although most people didn't have enough sense of humour to appreciate our teacher's sarcasm, he was like the artsy version of House :P But good luck with that, I'm sure you'll make an awesome music teacher!

But why do you want to teach in high school, why not in University or in a proper music school? I'm just curious because it seems to me that teaching kids (ok i'm young but mature enough for my age to refer to them as kids :P) would be a big hassle. Some of them can be a real pain in the derriere.

I ate Chinese last night. It was very nice.

I could also teach in a proper music school, but I would most likely have to work weird hours, since kids have to take lessons in the evenings and on the weekends. I also wouldn't get the summers off! School teachers in Ontario get paid summer vacations and an excellent pension when they retire. So good, in fact, that most of them retire in their 50's. But again, I'm not sure if I want to teach music in an Ontario high school.

I could become a professor, since I have to go to grad school anyways. But I'd also have to spend a few years working on a PhD before I can become a full time professor. Before getting a PhD, you're just an assistant professor working part time, usually teaching night classes. So I'd have to find a day job in my field anyways to beef up my resume :)

Hm, becoming a professor sounds promising! Whatever you do though, I'm sure you'll do fine :)
What kind of music are you into, btw?
