I'm a critic and you guys have typos.

Actually, the title was a joke. Although it is true. Your Newbie guide has a bunch of BBCode problems. ;)

Okay but yep, I'm new, so here's some stuff about me. I'm a male senior in high school, looking to go to Furman University next year. I've got a 4.0 GPA so I'm not a moron. My name's Taylor, and most likely a majority of the music I listen to none of you have ever heard of. But we need variety, right?

I'm also a SuperModerator of SuperCheats, a gaming website (don't worry, I'm not advertising :P), one of about ten. Kinda odd since I don't play too many games. Most of my games are pretty old. Gamecube, for the win.

I actually came here hoping to get some comments on some covers of songs I recorded solo. I have one microphone (SM57) and an X2u, which bypasses a mixer and sends the mic straight to a computer via USB. I use Audacity, possibly the worst recording software ever, and I have barely a clue how to use it. So my recording isn't top notch yet. But I think its drcent. I've got some crazy other bands to show you as well. Maybe even some album and song reviews.

As for sticking around, I'll wade around here for a while, but this was just one site I happened to stumble upon, so no guarantees quite yet. I'll try to stick around a good bit though.

Music taste is pretty cool. I'm all about a good live performance, and vocalists who have a real talent; I don't care if they don't have amazing sound quality in a studio album or they have variance in their voices. If the singer can actually SING and not simply use a computer to correct their voices, then I have a huge respect from them. No matter how good a studio album is, if they don't have much legitimate talent, they get nothing from me. Also, autotune sucks.

I'm a Christian, by the way. I have no idea what that has to do with anything, but I figured I'd throw that out there.

Paedantic Basterd 10-26-2011 11:15 AM

A couple of points before we get down to it:

1) What you listen to, I would wager many people here are aware of.
2) You've read our code guide, but possibly not our rules, as self promotion is strictly prohibited here, and you will have to become a member of the community before you may share your work.

And now: Welcome. If you so desire to stick around, you might do well here.

tbug2007 10-26-2011 11:27 AM

1) I guess we'll see. I'll say it's unlikely though.

2) I did, and I realize. I read them. And notice I said "I came hoping," not "I am going to." I'll obviously be a part of the community, but that doesn't expell sharing something I'm proud of in an attempt to get critique to do better I the future. Self promotion typically means all you want is publicity. I'm looking for critique.

And now, hey! :D

So I dunno really where to start, so yeah.

OH!! And I'm Americanese.

Paedantic Basterd 10-26-2011 11:30 AM

Well, I'll advise you for now not to, purely on the basis that not all of the mods will come into this thread and see your intentions, and typically the course of action is to delete the thread and ban the user when self-promo material is posted. Just because I have had this talk with you doesn't mean everyone is aware, so I'd say just play it safe for a bit, and if you're still not sure whether you should post it, PM a mod and ask.

I would love to hear a list of your favourite bands. This isn't a challenge. It's probable I don't personally know them all. But it's always a good starting point.

tbug2007 10-26-2011 11:32 AM

Right, that makes sense. xD I was just kinda throwing that out though. And yeah once I get home I'll post some of the bands. My fave is waaaay indie. But they're so good that it's amazing. So I'll be back in a bit and see what happens.

Paedantic Basterd 10-26-2011 11:33 AM

I'm not sure I can cope with the suspense. That's only a half facetious statement. I do want to know quite a bit.

tbug2007 10-26-2011 11:55 AM

Oh. Huh. I guess I registered in the past some time ago. Weird, I don't remember that. Oh well. And I'll post them now ;D

:rofl:Good luck with that!

Can nobody here critique? D;

He's just butthurt that we have rules on this website.

Phantom Limb 10-26-2011 12:59 PM

What are your favorite bands though? I'm super curious.

Paedantic Basterd 10-26-2011 01:08 PM

Mine? I suppose that's constantly changing. At the moment I'm loving John Grant's solo album. I pretty much always like Radiohead, The Decemberists, and Of Montreal. A lot of variations of pop music.

For some reason the polarity of this statement made me chuckle. It just goes to show everyone has their own prejudices...some more stringent than others.

I do hope they're giving you some financial aid. I shudder to think what the base tuition is there.

*I* can critique your songs and your recording, bug. What's more, I would enjoy doing so!

Here's what you can do, if you wish: go to the Songwriting, Lyrics, and Poetry section and create your own thread, such as "Bug's Collection." Then you can post some lyrics and perhaps a youtube video or myspace link that provides the recording that you'd like to have critiqued.

One of the best parts of making music, I feel, is learning from each other's attempts and giving feedback in the hope that it may help. Being able to be part of another person's creative process is a great privilege. I've met some nice musicians here at MB who like input and suggestions. There is a difference between advertising one's music and seeking critiques and feedback. I understand that difference.

I'm also curious about the songs you listen to that you say no one else may know! If you'd like to, please post them in the thread I made for the very purpose of introducing people to music they like by non-famous musicians:

http://www.musicbanter.com/general-m...ous-bands.html

Welcome to MB! I hope you will find a "home" here and enjoy it for however long you stay.

tbug2007 10-26-2011 02:52 PM

Coolness :D

And a couple bands would be The Kin and the Reign of Kindo. They're pretty much at the top. But I'll post in those threads.

It's true, you were right: I've never heard of those bands! :p:

Yeah, I think the MB rules should be harsher, too.

Yeah me too.

I mean I'm all for deleting posts with typos.

It doesn't get funnier the more often you say it.

If you were referring to his 4.0 GPA statement, that made me chuckle too. The fact that someone considers GPA a good measure of intelligence is pretty funny.

Not likely. I would think most people on MB have heard of Toby Mac and the Blue Man Group. Whether they hear them on a regular basis or not is more questionable.

This metaphor would work better if you didn't spend so much time here.

Nice sentence! By the way, the word is "decent". ;)

"drcent" is what 50 Cent is calling himself now that he's finished med school.

Bug simply said his 4.0 GPA means he's not a moron. He didn't say that a GPA is a good measure of intelligence.

A grade point average is a good measure of whether people are willing or able to use their intelligence to do what is needed to get a high grade point. Bug's 4.0 tells me he knows how to apply himself and complete tasks. I can think of few good reasons to avoid using one's intelligence in high school.

I think to make your original statement into a proper metaphor, SIRIUSB, one should say:

"This forum to me IS a car wreck that everyone slows down to look at . . . ya just gotta look!"

(:band: -- emoticons optional.)

Hopefully tbug will appreciate the humor here. :)
