Mom of 2 teen rock musicians trying to navigate their world

Hey, everyone. I'm a 47-year-old mother of two boys, 15 and almost 17, who are School of Rock students and have their own band. My husband puts a huge amount of time, energy, and money into helping them with their band and the three of them have a blast working on it together.

I'm your basic PTA, soccer mom, church-oriented kind of person who grew up on classical music. Choral music is my first love. So, yeah, a total square. I sometimes find myself disoriented and "not like the others" with this whole rock band thing in our family. Coming to MusicBanter from time to time with my questions and, dare I say, anxiety, is bound to help me out.

I know this for sure because I have already been the grateful recipient of your help. In my first thread the other day, I asked for opinions about what I saw as negativity and mean-spiritedness in one of my sons' original lyrics. Those who have replied have given me perspective I badly needed, in multiple ways. I can't thank those people enough.

So, yeah. I'm glad to be here. And I hope I can find ways to contribute here like so many of you are. Thanks.

Welcome, Caroline. Great to hear about your music-oriented family and the support your kids are getting; hopefully they'll get famous and be able to pay you back for your belief in them.

Don't worry about not knowing much about their sort of music or being out of place; there are plenty of different sub-forums here and people are always ready to help and advise. We even have a classical section, if you don't want to go too far off the beaten track!

But I'd definitely counsel you to join in a few threads, find some music style that either interests you or that you would like to know more about, and well, just basically have fun! Have a look at the journals section, where you'll find a lot of interesting music, and don't feel shy: start a thread if you want (just make sure you have checked to see there isn't one already, via the search facility).

Won't your boys be amazed when you can speak authoritatively about the best Cop Shoot Cop or Electric Wizard album, or go on at length about the dubstep or chillout genre? Or who were the movers and shakers in the NWOBHM movement?

Hey welcome. I'm glad that our members helped you with your dilemma. Hope that you do stick around and participate in our forum!

I also love classical music. I'm 22 and I am a music major in university, playing the flute. Have been playing the flute for 14 or 15 years now (I've lost count haha!) I only got serious about it maybe 5 years ago though. I want to be a music teacher.

I love to talk about classical music and composers from all eras so maybe you can indulge me with some conversation on it?

We usually seem to have two different ideas of humor, but today we are on the same page obviously. "Well, Gladys, I was thinking that for the Christmas pageant, we could have all the kids do a rousing chorus of 'Funeralopolis'."

Glad you're sticking around, Caroline. Your kids have great talent and I look forward hearing about your families' rock band exploits. If you feel like it, maybe even consider starting a journal about your family and updates on the musical things happening in your and your families' lives! I know I'd enjoy reading about it.

One thing though. A few of our esteemed members are probably a little more nihilistic than you might be used to. Don't worry, just run with it. If you decide to stay I'm sure your cheerfulness will brighten the place up a bit.

Always great to have a fellow classical music fan on the site! Although most people on here have eclectic taste, a member with thorough knowledge of the genre is still an asset to the community.
