Thanks for your welcome.

My partner is a bit annoyed with me at the moment because I am particularly music- mad and am spending up a storm right now. Here are a few things I am listening to at the moment. I hope it gives you some idea of my favourite artists.

The Staple Singers - I love Mavis Staples voice and love the groups roots in good black gospel and their later move into Stax and more gritty sort of soul.

Big Joe Turner sings Rock n Roll – I first came across Big Joe while watching Clint Eastwood’s film ‘Piano Blues’ which I really like. Big Joe sings these old rockers pretty damn well.

The Memphis Album by Guy Sebastian – I was pretty surprised by this one. Guy Sebastian is an Australian who has a pretty good voice. He managed to record in Memphis Tenn. with guys like Steve Cropper and the late “Duck” Dunn and he made an album featuring good covers of a lot of the old Stax and Atlantic classics. Not a bad effort from him.

Skip James, Willie McTell and Lemon Jefferson – Yazoo CD’s. I appreciate Johnson, Son House and Patton but these recordings by James, McTell and Jefferson have something about them that appeals to me more at the moment. Maybe there is a different sort of approach from the Delta guys; I like the McTell and Jefferson’s guitar and the change of voice from that darker and rawer delta sound. I also like the inclusion of the piano tracks in James’ music.

The Roots of Amy Winehouse – I quite like Amy Winehouse’s music. I am not really into any dramas that she may have had. There is a pretty cool cd which looks at her roots, so there are plenty of songs from people like Billy Holliday, Frank Sinatra, and Sammy Davis etc. etc. This is a very good album.

Live at Ronny Scott’s by Jeff Beck – this is a DVD of the show Beck played rather than a CD. This was pretty cool to watch and I got a kick out of it. Beck really played well during this set and he had guests like Eric Clapton with him. I love his bassist; she was almost a show stealer in this DVD.

Anyway here are a few things I am listening to at the moment. There are more but it gives a bit of an idea.
