So edgy. Anyway I'm not telling anyone what to do it's just something that I was glad was brought up and relieved to see I'm not alone in being bothered by it.

I think there are contexts where it can be used for comedic effect but that relies on the comedian. I agree that a lot of try hard pseudointellectuals use it as a cheap meme though. It's not a black and white issue, like everything else.

The irony of you saying something like this is hilarious to me.

You're absolutely right I just don't think anyone here who thinks it's funny to use homophobic slurs (and then justify it with a comedy bit) is going to care. I hate seeing it on the boards, tbh, and I've taken to just ignoring or not associating with the people who throw it around like it's funny. I called someone out on it in plug but no one cares about what I think so now I just leave plug if that person shows up.

That would be me I suppose? If so, I apologize if it offends you or anything, I certainly didn't mean to come off as that sort of guy.

Edit: it's not even about controlling what people say, it's about not wanting to associate with people who use that word - especially if you're straight and have never been on the receiving end of the hatred and violence with which that word is associated. It's just in poor taste, imo, but it is important to distinguish that this is my perception through an American lense, I acknowledge that there are cultural variations in relation to the word in question.

No, but then I don't tell nearly as many racist jokes here as I do at work in a store full of black people. Different environments breed different humor for a million reasons.

Nobody's controlling you - I'm loudly judging you in a social context, I don't want to make a speech law or sick Jezabell and Tumblr on you with pitchforks. I could care less whether you choose to continue to use the word or not. You're not an uncle or a good friend; there's no loss here for me. I think and operate independent of SJW movements (which I loathe and whom I believe would not be offering you 1/10th the reasoned discourse I am).

I do really think that the majority of people that use the word '***got' as an insult are operating on a social structure that's based in masculine insecurity, i.e., toxic masculinity. And I know in some subcultures it would be difficult and uncomfortable (or at least take some clever social skills) to not be like that.

I was raised a commercial fisherman out of small fishing town in Alaska, which is very much that kind of culture. I'm now a PhD student studying theoretical neuroscience abroad in liberal Ontario, Canada. It was a long transition period for me, and maybe being an actual adult with two daughters had a lot to do with it, but I can see the legitimate struggles underlying SJW movements. I just don't care for the methods, or really believe in methods at all; sociological state of a culture is emergent and the law of unintended consequences will make Trump president if you try too hard to push people in one direction.

That big wall of text was because your comment has that underlying tone about this being a 'free speech vs. civil rights' matter. Which is a tired dichotomy *yawn*. I'm going to go make Boxing Day dinner now.

At the end of the day, all you really have to do to escape it is turn your computer off. It's not hard to get away from it if you don't like it. But that doesn't mean I'm gonna stop using it as a joke. I personally find that it helps a joke become funnier because of how the word sounds. I wouldn't however go around in public calling people ***gots because that's wrong. On the internet, there are no boundaries unless told.

That was a fast response and wow, you're totally still missing the point or disingenuinely still trying to play it off like I'm offended so I should just go away to protect my fragile self.

What was your post supposed to signify? That I should somehow feel bad because I express my freedom of speech on the internet? I didn't quite understand what you'd be getting at otherwise since you explicitly stated that using the word is due to one's own biological insecurity and own ignorance of social structures. Which 99% of the time, the word is used because it's funny. You don't seem to have that sense of humor, but that doesn't mean it's a bad thing.

It makes more sense for someone like me to understand that concept than most though, right?
