Does that mean he's interesting enough to pass the time during a boring activity but not so interesting that it distracts from the boring activity? Don't get me wrong I love a used book store but to me that's a single person activity cause having someone else there I'm talking to will ruin the concentration I need to properly peruse used books and now I'm just pointing at random corny sci fi books and being like "Hey, doesn't that look like a corny sci fi book lol?" And **** sharing a pot of coffee.

Maybe it means that he's not a dunderhead who just wants to gawk at sci-fi books.

How are you supposed to browse books together though? The act of picking up a book, looking at it, reading the back cover, reading a page or two, etc, kind of forgoes a social aspect so for it to be a social thing you kind of have to not really be browsing in any meaningful way. I've done that at the Barnes and Noble at the mall while waiting for a movie to start with a friend but that's pretty shallow as far as book browsing is concerned, and consequently the activity of browsing books wasn't that interesting and I'm just looking for books as conversation starters.

"Have you read this one?"
"No what's it about." "It's about crawling through mud and existence etc." Don't blame the act to cover for your shallow friends.

Bookshops are a solo activity
There’s nothing to talk about

How well read do you and your friends have to be to be able to point out any random book and reliably at least one of you can talk about it?

I don't know I just like to absorb myself in a used bookstore in a way that other people would be an intrusion. It would be less of a thing at a Barnes and Noble where the capitalist whore setting is whatever, but a used book store run by some person who just loves books and has a store dedicated to their passion just necessitates my full attention and **** you go away cause there are random gems to find that I just might want to be internally excited about all by my ****ing self until I get to the counter and nerd out with the proprietor.
