A song played in 1996

Hi everyone,

There’s a song that has been bugging me since the end of 1996. I’m from the UK. I first heard this song around October 1996 in a hardware store. I then heard it at the end of December 1996 in a cafe in Manchester city centre. I have never heard it again since. I have traweled through the singles charts of 1996 with no success.

The song is sung by a man. It sounds melancholy with a touch of the blues. I thought it might be Roy Orbison or someone similar.

I have played a snatch of the melody on a piano app. I tried to upload it to attach to this message but it is an invalid format. It is an mp4a file.

27 years have passed and this song still haunts me. Any help identifying it would be greatly received.
