Jazz is such an umbrella term it's impossible to call one album of one era of jazz the best.
The importance of Kind of Blue is that Miles introduced Modal jazz to the world.

it was the first to use free jazz theory, though not totally free jazz

Ornette Coleman's first use of totally 'free jazz' (I believe) was his album 'Free Jazz'. Obviously, right?

Anyway, there are two quartets, one plays in the left channel, the other in the right. It's one continuous 37 minute track.
