bungalow 12-16-2005 02:18 PM

.....Danny?!!?!?!?!11

I only hav his greatest hits.......
It isnt too bad
I listen from time to time

jazzfromhell 12-16-2005 04:25 PM

Not the best pianist I've ever heard (that goes to Art Tatum, who was also BLIND), but damn, the Monk's got style. Definitely one of my favorite jazz musicians, and he could really bring out the best of the people he played with (John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Art Blakey, Max Roach, etc.). "Ruby My Dear" is one of my favorite jazz songs.

i love his live from france sets, they seem to be the edgiest. Chick Corea < Monk man

boris jawaka 12-20-2005 10:43 PM

thelonious monk is amazing.

if you look at the sheet music of his songs a lot of them are very chromatic e.g. well you needn't but when you listen to them they sound almost bluesy as opposed to chromatic.

going up in semitones isnt generally that nice to listen to but monk can do it so that it is totally listenable.

does anybody here know of t.j.kirk? they are a band with charlie hunter who cover rasaan roland kirk, james brown and thelonious monk songs exclusively

ddp 08-24-2006 07:07 PM

Monk wrote about 70 songs and all are perfect.

Seltzer 08-24-2006 10:15 PM

I love Thelonious Monk. He's my favourite jazz musician/band. Quite an interesting style of piano.

His greatest hits is great, but his studio albums are good as well.

swim 09-15-2006 09:26 PM

He's way up there as far as favorite jazz musicians go. Everything he's put out if perfect. There's no other way to describe it. Every single note just feels so right.

I agree, strange thing about him when I first heard him play I thought he could not play well. Then I figured out that he meant to play every note that way.
He is very angular.

ddp 09-16-2006 07:11 AM

There is an amazing documentary movie about Monk called "Straight no Chaser" If you have not seen it do so.

MoonlitSunshine 09-16-2006 08:02 AM

I love his music. It's great when I want to wind down, at least, that of his stuff that I have.

glazedface 09-29-2006 04:18 PM

Hes got some great stuff. the way i foudn out about him was kinda funny...i was making a soundtrack piece for a movie in my video class and someone was telling me that it sounded like the song "blue monk." so i had to check it out.

ralfsmith 10-06-2006 01:38 PM

Oh its very interesting. Could you provide me more information ?

I don't see how being blind makes playing the piano any harder. Probably makes it easier. You play with your body and ears not eyes.

littleknowitall 10-07-2006 07:55 PM

Sophisticated Lady is a Duke ellington tune. Are you listening to Monk playing it?

littleknowitall 10-10-2006 10:17 AM

most likely, in which case someone best send me some of his stuf now that you have my interest.

drumczar 10-11-2006 08:09 PM

Love the Monk. He's been a big influence on me personally. "Straight No Chaser" is worth seeing. You see his brilliance as well as his dark insanity.

That is a good one. There is another one called the Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane that is also good.

Also "Monk meets Mulligan" is essential.

You're a pretty big monk fan!! How about "Brilliant Corners" that one is my favourite.

MoonlitSunshine 10-25-2006 08:48 AM

No, unfortunately. I don't actually have that much, it was jsut coincidence I think. I have:

Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane
Monk and Coltrane at Carnegie Hall
Monk In Motion
and The Complete Colombia Solo Studio Recordings

That's about it. What am I missing?

You can see a complete list here:

I really like "Underground" I think it was his first recording with columbia. there is a great version of "In walked bud" with vocal by jon hendricks.

Have you seen the movie about him? "Straight no chaser"

Moon Pix 03-24-2007 05:22 PM

The Monk In Tokyo album is absolutely first class.

mandown23 03-28-2007 10:22 AM

Albert Maksimov 07-05-2007 08:42 AM

Pls.,look T.Monk on YouTube

Yeh,HE WAS GENIUS!

Dmitry 08-27-2007 08:17 AM

Have you ever listened how the same Monks "Criss Cross" played two great pianists - Kenny Kirkland - 1991 and EST - in "Plays Monk". It is so good!
I love it!

vivies 06-14-2009 08:02 AM

Yes ! Monk is particularly unique for his harmonic style and the way he approached keyboard. I remember when I first heard him ( I was a teenager ) I thought he was playing wrong ! A few years later, I wrote a little piece in Monk's style called "Monky monk" for piano solo. Great artist !

I only heard this album relatively recently. Not only is it possibly my favorite Monk document - it's one of my favorite jazz albums; can't get enough.

Yup, that's a great documentary! I think it was produced by Clint Eastwood IIRC.

Round Midnight is my favorite!!

captaincaptain 11-15-2009 12:40 AM

I recently purchased "Brilliant Corners" as a introduction to Monk. Hopefully I will be able to get my hands on more and more of his albums.

It's a very good introduction to Mr. Monk. More will be forthcoming ;)
