Acid Jazz?

Whom are the ACID JAZZ artist you like?

I prefer:

Max Beesely's High Vibes
Zero 7
Thievery Corp
Brazillian Girls
Zap Mama

Whom else?

Are you all simply not familiar with acid jazz?

TheBig3 02-27-2008 12:17 PM

Well probably not the bands to be honest. Its more of a genre that escapes most people because its often times background music. I know if I throw it up on Last FM then I rarely tune in for the artist. I love gnappy and most of the genre is great urban late night music but its more akin to trance in that it seems to be created by non-descipt folks.

And I maybe wrong but is Theivery Corp. Acid Jazz? I might be thinking of another band...who was on the MI:2 soundtrack?

I would'nt call Zero 7 or Thievery Corporation Acid Jazz at all. It was mainly at it's peak in the early 90's with bands like The Brand New Heavies and Young Disciples.

^^ I disagree. Both are on more Acid Jazz comps than alternative mixes. You have to look at their entire body of work and not just the popular mainstream hits.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corduroy (band) check out their album 'High Havoc', used to be addicted to that album.

Also a band from the uk called 'Mother Earth' but I can't find them online. Run a search for the albums 'mr freedom' and 'grow your own EP'.
Well worth it.

A lot of compilations are compiled by people who know naff all about the genre that they are compiling for. i will say you have a case for Zero 7 although their music is ambient. Thievery Corporation take in all sorts of genres including Bossa Nova, Dub, Hip Hop, Middle Eatern and Reggae so I can safely say that I would not class them as an Acid Jazz band.

Acid Jazz...should be in electronica, no? I never really made any firm connection between AJ and jazz music.

There are actually two distinctly different genres of music called "acid jazz". The original was a style of "west coast" jazz from the late 60's/early seventies jazz that's very mellow with a lot of bright yet laid-back melodies and intermittent horn arrangements. The legendary jazz guitarists Wes Montgomery is almost always associated with this style of music as he undoubtedly pioneered the genre. The second genre is, of course, electronica; and while I could probaly just pop onto wiki and make myself look a lot smarter than I actually am, I will instead confess that I know nothing else about it.
