Jazz Drummers

Ok, as you all may, or may not, know I'm a fan of Jazz. I'm not super knowledgeable of the genre but like the sound of it, and have reversed engineered to finding some of my favorite musicians of all time(Ornette Coleman, Sun Ra, Miles Davis). But, one thing that's always been one of my favorite aspects of Jazz is the percussion. It's so complex, and varied compared to rock. So sophisticated, and intricate.

Lately, I've been getting into Elvin Jones, and have always been somewhat vaguely into Ronald Shannon Jackson. I'm curious, what other Jazz drummers are there out there that you guys like? Personally, I feel the art of jazz percussion is one of it's very own.

Jack DeJohnette plays drums but I'm not sure if this is a recommendation for a drummer or an album;

Terje Rypdal / Miroslav Vitous / Jack DeJohnette is one of my favourite fusion albums. He also played on Bitches Brew.

Max Roach has been one of the best I have listened to. He was a pioneer of bebop.

Buddy Rich is the best drummer of any genre, in my opinion.

If you're not familiar with Mastodon, Brann Dailor has a Jazzy drumming style, as does Bill Ward from Black Sabbath in his fills:

Mitch Mitchell with Jimi Hendrix was pretty jazzy too, wasn't he? I'm most familiar with jazz drummers on a rock level, sorry.

BTW: I agree with your sentiment of Jazz drumming; it's what has inspired me to try being a drummer and take note of good drumming.

If we're talking about jazz-inspired drummers in rock Robert Wyatt is another good choice.

Albeit, I don't know, I still feel the pale in comparison to their Jazz counterparts, or Jimmy Carl Black, Art Tripp, or any of the percussionists to work with Zappa and/or Beefheart.
