Have you listened to Tom Waits? If not, Closing Time sounds like the album for you.

Miles Davis album: Birth of the Cool is one of my favorite recordings. I also like Tutu.

he's a great artist

Anyone interested in a bit of instrumental desert blues? Just come across this guy, so if you play this clip, you`ll know as much about him as as I do:-

I would really appreciate it, greetz

I suggest to listen such performers

Lizz Wright, Gregory Porter, Dianne Reeves, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Raul Midon

Especially, I like to watch live concerts. :)

DeadChannel 12-08-2014 01:01 AM

I got some earlier in my introduction thread, but I'd sure appreciate some free jazz suggestions. ..

In addition to what I already recommended, here's some more current free jazz albums.

Matana Roberts - Coin Coin Chapter One: Gens de couleur libres
The Thing - Bag It!
Zu - Asmodeo

I think you'll especially like the last two, being a noise fan.

DeadChannel 12-08-2014 07:17 PM

Great, definitely some stuff to look at as soon as I my laptop back/ get a stable connection.

Thank ya.

I reckon that the best blues is by Robert Johnson- it's easy to find CDs of all his output. This guy is the original, a seminal influence over all that followed. He is raw, basic, unaffected, gutsy, as blues should be but rarely is. He sings like he's possessed by a voodoo charm, his immediate driving guitar playing shows a genius of technique and understanding of the instrument that is unequalled in his idiom, and he really sounds like he knows what he's singing about when he sings about whores, pimping, hard drugs, jumping trains, devilish curses, fast love, etc, as opposed to other singers who are just singing about it- this guy lived it, or at least it certainly sounds like it.

So I'm a newbie here. I've spent a large part of the year digging through Monk, Coltrane, Davis and Hancock. Mingus is up next. Where should I start?

What are the top 2 or 3 albums by him?

I'm wanting to find more jazz fusion now that I'm listening to Jean-Luc Ponty again. I need to get verything by Return to Forever, and maybe Chick Corea - Electric Band, and I've got all of Weather Report, so I'm looking for more fusion. Maybe even stuff that's mixed with world music, I duno, but I just love rock and jazz, or jazz and really anything else mixed in with it, since it almost always guarantees excellent music and intricate stuff and great musicians.

Zhanteimi 12-28-2014 11:00 PM

I've never listened to a John Coltrane album before. Recommend to me your top five.

Frownland 12-28-2014 11:01 PM

1. Interstellar Space
2. Ascension
3. Sun Ship
4. A Love Supreme
5. Meditations

Just a warning, I'm into the freer stuff, and A Love Supreme is the only one that isn't heavy with the free jazz. Blue Train is a great more standard Jazz album from Coltrane that you ought to listen to just so you can see all of his sides.

Zhanteimi 12-28-2014 11:03 PM

Cheers!

MasterBaggins 12-29-2014 09:56 AM

Giant Steps is also one of his more famous albums as well, but it's in an older style of recording, so Coltrane is always on the left, and the drums and bassist are on the right all the time, and it's a bit hard to get used to.

I always say start with A Love Supreme. If you liked the free, crazy stuff on the album move forward into his discography. If you preferred the more traditional stuff, go backwards. Makes it easy. For best results, do both, because everything the man has ever done is genius.

I'm assuming you've also gone through Miles more experimental stuff? Get Up With It and Big Fun would classify as great fusion albums.

^Hell yes, highly seconded recommendation. Also check out one of Coryell's solo albums, "Spaces".

Hey there!
I'm not sure if my question fits in your thread but I'm on the verge of despair and need the help of all the Jazz/Blues fans here!
In advance I have to say that I'm from Germany.
In 2014 I've seen a Jazz/Bluesrock concert in tv.
There were some great artists who showed their talents. Most of them were older experienced musicians, but not that famous.
ONE OF THEM was a very young guy with breathtaking guitar riffs!!! He looked like he was about 18/19 years old. His haircut remembered me of the young Alex Turner(Arctic Monkeys) or Jake Bugg. BUT I forgot his name and never found him again!! I really want to know who this talented young boy was....maybe some of you can help me!
I know it's difficult, but I guess there aren't too many very good blues/Jazz artists in that age....
It would mean a lot to me if you could help me! Thank you!

Having a hard time finding what I'm looking for lately.

I've been questing for some southern country / delta blues, preferably multi-instrumental (slide / steel guitar, banjo, harmonica, mandolin, accordion, upright bass etc) and extra swampy but I'm looking for albums with decent studio production, which understandably excludes a lot of great **** from the 20s - 50s, but I'm looking for thick multi-layered blues with confident and ambitious instrumental backing, the kind of stuff that I'd imagine played significant role in influencing bands like The Allman Brothers.

Try to keep it acoustic, keep it busy, keep it twangy, big jams, no generic bare naked 12-bars.
Huge bonus points for slide guitar and banjo, bonus points for harmonicas, bonus points for open tunings, bonus points for instrumentals.

It sounds to me that what you're really looking for is bluegrass.

I've recently fallen in love with Django Reinhardt material and what seems to be called 'gipsy jazz'. Has anyone by any chance got some GJ recommendations up his/her sleeves?
