Howlin' Wolf - Back Door Man

Vyacheslav Guyvoronsky, Andrei Kondakov & Vladimir Volkov

Criminally underappreciated (well, actually simply mostly unknown outside of Russia) modern jazz trio.

Recommended Jazz and Blues

Check out a group called Snarky Puppy

For a nice old school blues/jazz combination, try these tunes:

Mercy, Mercy, Mercy by Cannonball Adderley

Funk Blues: Chameleon

Thanks to rostasi ( see new sig), I have discovered what seems to be the endless cool of Abdullah Ibrahim, once known as Dollar Brand.
Get yourself a slice of mellow here:-

I am looking for something similar to Gallagher's "Irish tour" and Bloomfield/Cooper/Still 's "Super Session". Any suggestions?

Tristan_Geoff 10-05-2016 09:22 PM

Alrighty. Anyone wanna help me cheat on homework? Gotta find achievements, milestones, and influences on other artists set forth by Chick Corea. Looking at you Frowny. Thanks in advance.

Frownland 10-05-2016 09:36 PM

Mother****er was on Bitches Brew dude. That is some madness that turned the jazz world upside down. Return to Forever is pretty great, as is the Chick Corea Elektric Band. He influenced the jazz world by bringing goddamned scientology into it so there's also that.

I mean just listen to that and it should inspire you to go more in depth on your assignment.

I love Bitches Brew dude. Guess I forgot about that detail and I am fairly interested in researching it, but alas, I gotta do it all before I shut down at 1230 so thanks a ton.

Frownland 10-05-2016 09:42 PM

Well, him and Herbie Hancock were contemporaries and influenced each other quite a bit I think. You can hear his influence in a Jamie Saft's work.

;)

Still wish my group got assigned Ornette Coleman, but eternally grateful I didn't get the short end with Kenny G.

Recently started to get back into listening jazz and would like to find more

I just recently started listening to more jazz again after a hiatus of ten years. These are some of my favorites and I'd like to find more stuff to listen to along the lines of them. I haven't had much success with the recommendations of similar artists by neither Spotify nor Lastfm.
Also if there are specific sub-genres that these fall into that I don't know the names of that would be most appreciated, I know that Nuspirit Helsinki was categorized as Nu Jazz at the time but I don't really enjoy most of the other Nu Jazz from that time as much (Jazzanova etc, stuff that has a jankier less flowing rhythm and more electronic influences) The other examples are also Finnish, one recent and the other from the 70s.

Nuspirit Helsinki - Seis Por Ocho (Original Jazz Session Mix)
Jukka Eskola - Siam Square
Olli Ahvenlahti - Sandy

Thanks!

I really need some male jazz vocals! I'm into Sinatra, Bennett, Nat Cole, Mark Murphy, Al Jarreau, Mel Tormé and I'm searching for some new male jazz vocalist :D Any recommendation? :)

BB King - The Thrill Is Gone

Music don't get much better.

brian_14 03-22-2017 02:17 PM

some instrumental blues

I have been listening to blues etc... before it was really out there in good form.

I am looking for some strictly guitar blues. JUST guitar music--no vocals!
Also some violin / fiddle music --- the same no vocals just the instrument!
Like Papa John Chreech....

any help is appreciated.

Looking forward to hearing from someone

Chula Vista 03-22-2017 02:43 PM

Check out some Jing Chi. Ford definitely leans on his bluesy side on those albums.

Eh **** it, may as well keep goin', starting with the prodigal skill of Bob Brozman, a controversial figure but undoubtedly one of the most skilled bluesman to ever walk the earth.

similar to in a silent way

I love this record and I was wondering if anyone might have a recommendation for something similar I may have missed.

Frownland 06-27-2017 05:28 PM

Difficult question and the only real answer is more Miles Davis.

I always thought that Innercity Ensemble carried on Davis' ideas from that time period and spat them through the lens of a post-Supersilent world. There's always other fusion artists which you've probably already explored, Zawinul's early work and Coryell's Spaces are similar in some ways, but Miles really made it his own.

Stephen 06-27-2017 05:35 PM

It never occurred to me these two might have crossed paths. Jimi Hendrix and John McLaughlin.

Stephen 06-27-2017 06:01 PM

Not exactly Miles but have you heard the album Terje Rypdal, Miroslav Vitous, Jack Dejohnette?

It was proceeded by Kilamanjaro and followed by Bitches Brew so if there's another Miles record with that sort of proto-ambient style what is it? I haven't listened to everything they've released of his but pretty damn close.

Coryell's Spaces
I think this is one I should know but I don't. Just scanning it on Spotify, sounds brilliant. Thank you.

No I haven't, thanks.

Frownland 06-27-2017 09:46 PM

Check out Big Fun, I'm listening to it for the first time right now and it's ****ing great. On the Corner is pretty sweet but it's much more funky and doesn't have as much variety as some of the other albums. Be sure to check out the complete In a Silent Way and Bitches Brew sessions too. This is pretty different from In a Silent Way but I've always loved Live - Evil. Just listen to it all, dude.

Since it's your thread, I'll dump some Spotify links:
Miles Davis - Big Fun
Miles Davis - On the Corner
Miles Davis - The Complete In a Silent Way Sessions
Miles Davis - The Complete Bitches Brew Sessions
Miles Davis - Live - Evil

OccultHawk 06-27-2017 09:53 PM

I appreciate it. I am familiar with all that stuff.

Frownland 06-27-2017 10:20 PM

Ja I realized after I posted it that I had misread your post a bit.

Still, Recollections is basically Music for Airports' dad.

Get Up With It

Quote:

Most of the 1973-75 material on The Complete On the Corner Sessions sounds tame by comparison to those three albums. But the box set also contains Davis's acid-funk band's only studio album, Get Up With It, which includes a meditational homage to Duke Ellington, He Loved Him Madly - a half-hour-long track that Brian Eno has quoted as a major influence on his ambient direction.

Stephen 06-28-2017 06:26 PM

More from Terje Rypdal - What Comes After

Lisnaholic 07-01-2017 08:59 PM

^ Aha! Time for me to play again that album you sent me ages ago.

Meanwhile, here's a track from Blue Camel, a 1992 album which brought together Rabih Abou Khalil (oud), Charlie Mariano (alto sax) and Kenny Wheeler (trumpet/ flugelhorn). That thing I never quite remember about the sum of the parts being greater really applies in this case: individually these three didn't do anything else quite as interesting as this consistently good album - or if they did, they never showed it to me, the b*stards !!

Frownland 07-01-2017 09:05 PM

Three | Bad Luck

myjazzcollectionsrare 07-16-2017 11:20 AM

I am such a sucker for Summertime. I mean, I believe that Summertime is a song that is truly madly deeply one of the few jazz standards song. So, I recommend Summertime by Sidney Bechet for the instruments, Summertime by Dionne Warwick & Summertime by Billie Holiday for jazz and a bit of blues and Summertime by Janis for the bluest of the blues.
