Well those dudes aren't cool jazz, but if you want some good **** look up Miles Davis ("Birth of the Cool"), first. After that look up Stan Getz and Lee Konitz. Should get you through the week.

Or check out Hank Mobley. Smooth and kind of underrated in my opinion.

I'm enjoying That's It!, the new album from the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. It's also their first album of all new material in 50 years.

I'm looking for some recommendations on Dizzie Gillespie albums. So far I have At Massey Hall and A Musical Safari. I like both... probably my favorite though is a few of the tracks on A Musical Safari. Long Long Summer, Pau De Arara, Kush. I'll also take Latin American/African jazz that has the same vibe.

Picked up the new album from Chicago blues guitarist Lurrie Bell recently. Blues in My Soul is a fine mix of originals & covers, and is recommended for anyone who enjoys old-school Chicago blues.

Dizzy Gillespie at Newport is good. Also Diz and Getz, which is his album with Stan Getz. I met Dizzy Gillespie in 1988 at a book signing for his autobiography and still have a gig poster that he signed.

Anthony Braxton Quartet - 12 Compositions

This quartet features Braxton on woodwinds, Marilyn Crispell on piano, Mark Dresser on bass, and Gerry Hemingway on drums. Braxton's style of jazz is very uncompromising, and results in a unique album from this creative quartet. Consisting of (you guessed it) 12 compositions that rely on written elements as well as improvised structures mapped out by Braxton. This album is awesome, imo, and if you're a fan of jazz, you'll at least be in for an interesting listen.

Here's an example of a Braxton composition that entails of improvisation:

An older clip of Braxton with a young Miroslav Vitous on bass (he's 65 now). This is a Coltrane number. Despite being named Tony Braxton, he is not related to Toni Braxton as far as I know.

^^^Superlative, as one should expect from Braxton. I've never heard of Vitous beyond his work with Larry Coryell. And no, he is not related to Toni Braxton, but he is the father of Tyondai Braxton.
