Peter Brötzmann & Jason Adasiewicz - Going All Fancy
It's great. Duh. Pretty subdued for Brötzmann. |
Mark Isham - Castalia (1988)
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon....1szTmlKQHL.jpg Pretty much a masterclass in ambient jazz. Isham on trumpet and synths, Patrick O'Hearn on bass, David Torn on guitar and Terry Bozzio on drums. It isn't atypical for the time, but it is extremely well done and atmospheric. |
Path by Bill Connors, Roger Jannotta, and Tom van der Geld
A laidback late 70’s ECM release with vibes and a guitarist who worked with Return to Forever I think both Nea and lisna would probably consider this worth a listen |

I just gave this one a listen. It's good but It didn't grab me on the first spin like the two previous albums did. It might turn out to be the type of album that grows on me after a while. Maybe a "slow burner" for me. |

a little tighter than the one from the Umoja Ensemble from about the same time if that's your thing. Watch for a copy of "Awareness" to come thru your door. Stanley Cowell is especially great on that one! Spoiler for Baba Hengates Part 1:

Kenton '76 is one i've been listening to a fair amount lately, along with a lot of the Mingus Big Band's Gunslinging Birds. This is a fair amount of big band stuff.

After enjoying that album for about 6 months or so, I went on a summer trip to study with Gary Burton in 1973. When I got home, I found my copy of that album on the floor of my bedroom with the bottom left hand corner of the cover in shreds (with teeth marks!). It turned out that this small, annoying poodle that we had decided to chew it up for some reason. Luckily the vinyl was spared. I still have that copy. That Kenton ‘76 album mentioned above too is a great album. Those Hank Levy charts are excellent (but I could’ve done without the Sondheim tho). One of Stan‘s last recordings. |

I dunno why some people get turned off by improvisation. That's part of the charm, especially on anything Corea is involved in. While I slightly prefer Light As A Feather over RTF's self-titled, I think they're pretty much unassailable up to and including Romantic Warrior. |

Glad you liked it. |
As grindy has just posted, same day, in both these threads:-
https://www.musicbanter.com/jazz-blu...tening-51.html = What jazz album are you listening to? https://www.musicbanter.com/jazz-blu...aganza-49.html = What are you listening to Jazztravaganza? I thought it might be a good moment to ask why we have two threads asking essentially the same question. Is there any difference between them? Am I the only person bugged by the fact that they weren't merged long ago? |
The other one has the sticky advantage but this one perseveres with pure grit and determination!

I'm rediscovering Billy Bang whom I haven't listened to in about ten years.
Too bad because he has some amazing albums. Currently listening to: Billy Bang Quintet Featuring Frank Lowe – Above & Beyond: An Evening In Grand Rapids https://open.spotify.com/album/5vkDqYF9IM3fg6CmWgRqD0 It's far from smooth jazz but this should be very listenable even for people who aren't into avantgarde jazz. Not to say that there aren't some delicous dissonant flourishes here and there keeping it interesting. This album is also a farewell to the great sax player Frank Lowe who died from lung cancer not long after this concert. He sounds great here and you'd never guess that this is the playing of a dying man with just one lung left. Recommended for pretty much everybody here who likes jazz. https://media1.jpc.de/image/w600/fro...8944020829.jpg |
I'll put that on my listening list! Right now I'm playing this, which is one of my favourite jazz albums I've heard so far:
Alice Coltrane - Journey In Satchidananda |

The Complete Ella Fitzgerald Songbooks (Verve, 1994) Spent all morning with this wonderful box set. Moving on but wanted to give a plug. Must have, imo. |

His Vietnam themed albums (Vietnam: The Aftermath and Vietnam: Reflections) are also highly recommended listening.

When Sun Ra is your sideman it’s pretty clear you’re a badass. I can’t wait to listen to this but I’m going to spend the rest of the day with with Sonny Rollins. |
Never heard that one.
Interesting. Sun Ra as a sideman is rare af. The only other album that comes to my mind atm where this is the case is Walt Dickerson's Impressions Of A Patch Of Blue. |
I listened to John Coltrane's Ascension today; now and then I was struck by the beauty but mostly I just felt overwhelmed. Big ensemble free jazz à la Coltrane is truly something else.
I enjoyed grindy's Billy Bang rec, especially the deeply soothing quiet part near the end of the third track, and the delightful violin outburst at the end of the record |

Fred Anderson - Timeless
Bass – Harrison Bankhead Drums, Percussion – Hamid Drake Tenor Saxophone – Fred Anderson https://open.spotify.com/album/1oVvRdAr1insHAiC3PishL Effortlessly inventive and beautiful. Absolutely amazing, telepathic interplay. All three are god tier but Hamid Drake's drumming stands out especially to me. |
