I kind of figured that was the case because while I didn't think that album was that great, I could definitely see how it would turn into the style I like.

Listening to "A Night In Tunesia" right now, didn't care for the first track but the second is pretty good.

Really? That first track is my favorite on the album. It's like pure energy.

Euronomus 01-09-2013 07:24 PM

Wait, Spotify seems to have two completely different albums by him with essentially the same name

I was listening to this one
A Night in Tunesia

But after listening to this I assume it's what you were referring to
Night in Tunisia
The first track here is much better.

Actually I was talking about neither of those, but the second has the same opening track as the one I was talking about. This is the one I was referring to, the real one. I have no idea what those other two knockoffs are but they make me scared to ever try Spotify. :)

Was looking for some violin led Free jazz:
Leroy Jenkins - Ai Glatson, pretty intense imo

Billy Bang - Vietnam the Aftermath, not really what I had in mind but still pretty good

Dave Douglas - Five

(^Not one of the best tracks imo but the only one I could find on YT)
Another album I found on my search for violin based free jazz. The band leader, Dave Douglas, is a trumpeter but on this record he plays with a string trio(violin, cello, bass) and a drummer. The group seems to function more as an equal collaboration, meaning there are more than enough violin leads and solo's to keep me happy(courtesy of violinist Mark Feldman). This album is all over the place(a good thing), from cacophony, to bizzaro world swing and bop, to a "late-night on a street corner under a lamppost" almost-solo trumpet pieces. I'm especially in love with the 42 second opening track "Invasive Procedure" which is probably the closest thing to a Converge/DEP track that a jazz group of this makeup will ever come.

The version on the real one is actually the second track on the first one I was listening to(the first track on the second is a different version from the real one)if that makes any sense. So that means the track I was saying I liked in the first place was the same one you were upset i didn't like:laughing: Damn Spotify

Well, I was going to post a YouTube from the 1979 album "Exhibition" by John Serry, but what I found there was less than stellar quality. To the best of my knowledge the Serry albums were never released as CD, so by definition they have to be gleaned from vinyl, and I have an excellent transfer system, so I just made my own YouTube video specifically to post here (although I also intend to post them to another thread debating the audio qualities of belt driven vs direct driven turntables)

Anyhoo, this is the jazz (probably more fusion) album I have spinning at the moment

Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall... I remember waiting for at least a year for this album to be released after the masters were found. The story goes that they were in a batch of masters slated to be destoyed when someone removed them, wrapped them and stashed them. Great album!

That is a fantastic album. I found it by surprise, as I was a new fan of the bebop / hard-bop style of jazz at the time it was released, but purchased it because of the story of how it saw the light of day.

The current album I'm playing: Herbie Hancock - Head Hunters. It's a fusion masterpiece. It's also one of the few fusion albums I own that my wife enjoys. I think she just puts up with Miles's electric period.

Paul Smeenus 02-13-2013 11:25 AM

I just got John Serry's new album, "The Shift", I'm still in the first track and it's very nice. It's not nearly as energetic as his early albums (so far, again I'm only 1 track deep, track 2 is coming up) but that's ok, it's more conventional jazz and less fusion-y than "Exhibition" or "Jazziz".

John Serry Jazz if you'd like to check it out

Jeff Tyzik - Radiance [1982] truly a great album from a great musician.

Kind of Blue is such a great album... and not because I think about what other people think when I say it's such a great album... because I can listen to it over and over and like different parts at different times. Haven't listened in a while so maybe it's time to do that again now.

Dark Horse 02-25-2013 09:29 PM

Speaking of Davis, i've been listening to In a Silent Way recently. So good.

Chives 02-26-2013 12:08 AM

Been giving a lot of different jazz albums listens lately, but Saxophone Colossus and Way Out West by Sonny Rollins are what I'll say for now. Both have been awesome for me lately. I'm still a jazz novice, though.

Aside from some Miles Davis, this is the only other jazz album I have in my collection, gonna have to see the jazz threads soon.

First got into Miles Davis,John Coltrane, Pat Metheny, Stan Getz and more recentley Thelonious Monk. I have just purchased another Miles Davis album to add to my collection 'On The Corner' (1972).
Im listening to this album right now and it is absolutely fantastic to hear Indian musicians paying tribute to Miles Davis. If you havent heard it I suggest you check it out right away. I would go on and post loads of jibberish about all the jazz albums Ive got but I cant be bothered just now and Ive noticed theres a section on your profile where you can add albums or something so might give that a try.

Miles Davis and John Coltrane are wicked. If you'd like something more modern check out:
Avishai Cohen - Continuo
Vijay Iyer - Accelerando

Absolutley amazing stuff!

The Jonah Jones Quartet - Jumpin' with Jonah on an original vinyl that I found at SpinStreet for 99 cents. Highly recommend

Steve Oliver

Stever Oliver plays Spanish guitar with an Eastern flavor, I think mostly Indian. Try the song Global Kiss. I like it very much. A lot depends on what types of lead instruments you like. (So far I haven't liked many songs with a lead electric bass.) What fusion styles you like with the smooth jazz. Fast or slow? Odd or generic?

Bwb - human nature

Uncle Vernon 06-09-2013 10:27 AM

At this moment, Charles Mingus - Mingus Ah Um.
Otherwise I've listened to a lot of Coltrane and Billie Holiday lately. "Blue Train", "A Love Supreme" and "Africa/Brass" by Coltrane, and "Solitude", "Songs For Distingué Lovers" and "Velvet Mood" by Billie Holiday.

"The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady" is another Mingus album I've been enjoying lately.

streetwaves 06-11-2013 12:03 AM

The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady is my favorite jazz rekkid of all time. What an album!

Recently Don Cherry's Eternal Rhythm (free jazz) and A Love Supreme. Actually, some Out to Lunch (Eric Dolphy) as well, which is fantastic.

The "Ascenseur pour l'échafaud" soundtrack by Miles Davis is incredible!

I mostly listen to random tracks. The lastest jazz album I bought is "Thuở Ấy Có... Jazz" by Tuyết Loan, a Vietnamese jazz lady. You can check my favourite track from this album by searching on Youtube: Tuyết Loan - Tôi đi giữa hoàng hôn, Văn Phụng. (I can't post link since I'm a newbie)
Ironically, jazz is an underground genre in Vietnam. You should know how hard I try to reach this genre.
