Listening to Out to Lunch by Eric Dolphy. Never get tired of this classic.

Charles Mingus - Ah um

I'm listening to Boney James' latest album Futuresoul. It's a very lovely album but I have quite a few favorites within the album especially the song "either way" ft stoklet Far From Home, Hand in Hand, Vinyl, and Drumline.

I needed something soft, so I put on Mercy Mercy Mercy, some soul jazz. Pretty good album. Not as good as I hoped.

Great, great record.

JGuy Grungeman 05-24-2016 02:39 PM

Yeah. Not like A Love Supreme. But still nice. I heard it's one of the best jazz records ever. Might be.

Have you gotten around to Sun Ship or Ascension yet? I rank those two above ALS and Blue Train, but I am more into the freer side of jazz.

JGuy Grungeman 05-24-2016 02:46 PM

I'm not the biggest jazz fan, but I do occasionally get a jazz binge, especially when I want to relax. I'm not much of a free jazz guy. I'm more into nu jazz and cool jazz. I haven't heard a lot of Coltrane, so Ascension has been on my list for a while. The majority of what I've heard is Miles Davis.

Frownland 05-24-2016 02:47 PM

Ascension's better imo, but Sun Ship is probably a better place to start as it's more accessible.

JGuy Grungeman 05-24-2016 02:49 PM

You mean start for free jazz? I'll take your word.

Frownland 05-24-2016 02:52 PM

For free jazz I'd say that one and Ornette Coleman's Shape of Jazz to Come. Probably Cecil Taylor's Nefertiti, the Beautiful One Has Come as well.

JGuy Grungeman 05-24-2016 02:57 PM

How many jazz albums do you think you've heard?

Umm. At least 500. I don't keep track of that kind of thing.

JGuy Grungeman 05-24-2016 03:02 PM

Didn't think you would. Just wondring about the estimate.

JGuy Grungeman 05-24-2016 03:06 PM

I know a musician you might like.

He has different music every album.

JGuy Grungeman 05-25-2016 09:23 AM

Taking Frown's advice, I'm playing Sun Ship.

JGuy Grungeman 05-25-2016 12:54 PM

Also, taking Frown's advice, I'm playing Ascension. I think it's widely known amongst jazz fans that Ascension has two versions. I'm going with the originally released edition 1, because my music philosophy is that the original release is the real album. I guess I consider edition ii to be a separate album with the same title.

They're paired together as parts one and two, generally.

JGuy Grungeman 05-25-2016 01:08 PM

Hmm. Still, I'll probably listen to "Edition II" later. My rule is to listen to the original release, because any rerelease that's different may tamper with the original flow. But isn't Edition II a different recording? I guess the two parts are albums to me in sense. Both are on my list anyway.

So, Sun Ship was cool but I'm not really digging Ascension. It's a bit to experimental for my taste. It's a fine album, and I don't think it's bad. It's just a bit hard for me to judge as there's too much going on.

Frownland 05-25-2016 01:32 PM

It's two different takes of the same song, pretty different from one another but very similar. If you want to not listen to half of the album for whatever reason that's cool, but Coltrane released them together.

JGuy Grungeman 05-25-2016 02:23 PM

I just looked up the info on multiple sources. Edition I was breleased solo, Coltrane released the other edition the same year but later to "replace" Edition 1. Later they were packaged as one album, notably on CDs. If they were released togther back when it came out, it would've had to be a double album.

Playing it. My favorite thing about modal jazz (no Coltrane pun intended), is how consistently soothing it is. Is it that soothing charm that makes 20-somethings like me actually miss the 60's?
