Essential Blues Albums?

Muddy Water's was the man. This insert is from the album "Electric Mud", his foray into psychedelic blues, which was his only attempt at crossing-over. It was a pretty entertaining bastardization, though not essential.

I started with Robert Johnson, but I rec. starting with Blind Willie McTell--just ask Bob Dylan.

Anything on Chess Records from the 1950s, you can't go wrong.

This '71 Taj Mahal record changed the way I thought of blues. Naturally, I correlated the genre to sorrow and well, sadness. Just from the album title, you know that's not what's in store. This album never fails to lift my spirits. What a breath of fresh air.

There's some records on Chess from I think the early 60s including discs by Howlin Wolf, Buddy Guy, which are fantastic. I also enjoy Skip James, Robert Johnson, Elmore James (I seem to recall his last sessions are pretty tremendous), and Charley Patton is amazing.

I love Howlin' Wolf and John Lee Hooker. For some classic blues I would start there, and some Robert Johnson though I've never been as fond of him. For something more contemporary, check out Seasick Steve.

One of my favourite blues albums is B.B. King's 1970 album Indianola Mississippi Seeds

The album is one of the most generally appreciated from his discography - by fans, critics and even King himself. To give you guys a sample of what it's like, check out this track "You're Still My Woman" .. Brilliant!
