From its early development until the present, jazz has incorporated music from 19th and 20th century American popular music. Its West African pedigree is evident in its use of blue notes, improvisation, polyrhythms, syncopation, and the swung note.

The word "jazz" (in early years also spelled "jass") began as a West Coast slang term and was first used to refer to music in Chicago in about 1915.

From its beginnings in the early 20th century jazz has spawned a variety of subgenres: New Orleans Dixieland dating from the early 1910s, big band-style swing from the 1930s and 1940s, bebop from the mid-1940s, a variety of Latin jazz fusions such as Afro-Cuban and Brazilian jazz, free jazz from the 1950s and 1960s, jazz fusion from the 1970s, acid jazz from the 1980s (which added funk and hip-hop influences), and Nujazz in the 1990s. As the music has spread around the world it has drawn on local, national, and regional musical cultures, its aesthetics being adapted to its varied environments and giving rise to many distinctive styles.

So, genre-wise, "Jazz" is today a bit of a an umbrella term which can/could include genres like bebop, hard bop, swing jazz, some pop music, acid jazz etc. This week you are quite free in your worship of jazz. Anything that fits under that umbrella works, so let's get it on!

Shouldn't it be Beatnicks? Not Hispters? Anyway...

She's currently best known as putting the two-boot dropkick to Justin Beiber in the Best New Artist category but she ought to be known for the chops. Jazz tends to be a elistist genre, full of album-checking conversation and name dropping posturing, so I thought it would be best to take from the new school. Enjoy!

Hipster has meant so many things since the word first came about and the hipster I'm referring to is this one :)

Here's a little gypsy jazz from Norway. Well, one of the guys is norwegian (Jimmy's a guitar virtuoso from the Netherlands) and the album was produced and recorded here (under the watchful eye of Jon Larsen from Hot Club de Norvège). Jimmy Rosenberg (from The Gypsy Kids) and Stian Cartsensen (from Farmers Market) recorded the album Rose Room together. No overdubs, just these two guys having fun in the studio :) This is Joseph Joseph which I assume is originally a Django Reinhardt song.
