The Mahavishnu Orchestra

Good Jazz. I recently bought the cd Birds of Fire. It is awesome. I would recommend it to any people out there who want to listen to a really good jazz-fusion record. If you've heard of them or have the cd then post something...:)

SATCHMO 04-16-2005 10:43 PM

Fantastic Jazz Fusion Band. The first album Inner Mounting Flame is also incredible. Both John Mclaughlin (guitarist) and Billy Cobham (drummer) have had great solo careers in jazz fusion after Mahavishnu Orchestra. If you want to listen to some phenomenally intense drumming, check out Cobham's solo stuff. Another great fusion band of the 70's is Chick Corea's band Return to Forever with Stanley Clark on Electric bass and the legendary Airto Moreira on percussion.

Soundgardener 04-17-2005 08:52 AM

Both of them are really great bands. I checked out some more stuff on Return To Forever, and liked it. On another note Billy Cobham has such an amazing style of drumming. He's been a big influence for a lot of drummers, including Jon Theodore from The Mars Volta.

Betty's Blonde 04-19-2005 03:39 AM

The Mahavishnu Orchestra were a solid band. i listened to them a fair bit back in the seventies. McLaughlin came from the Miles Davis rock jazz fusion period. Don't know where Cobam came from but he certainly put his mark on drumming thoughout the seventies. Goodman the violinist came from a band called Flock and the keyboardist Hammer went on to do some Great stuff with Jeff beck. Can't recall who the bassist was though.

Great fusion. I can't decide which is better Birds of Fire or Inner Mounting Flame none the less both essential jazz albums.

Mahavishnu Orchestra

I just got all four of thier good albums with thier original line-up thanks to my friend. Man, you just don't hear music like that anymore. John McLaughlin, as Frank Zappa so elegantly put it, "Plays like a ****ing machinegun" and Jerry Goodman tears up on that violin. I consider them Rock really, not much jazz as they are usually billed. Billy Cobham a monster, any Mahavishnu Orchestra fans out there? If not, then definetly check out

Inner Mounting Flame
Birds of Fire
Between Nothingness and Eternity
Lost Triden Sessions

And just see if you can listen to **** like System of a Down or White Stripes after that.

Mahavishnu Orchestra = The Shi.t such a tight prog band

hookers with machineguns 01-26-2006 01:32 AM

They were marvelous. Apparently they are prog, but regardless, their unique fusion sound makes them worth checking out.

soundgardenrox 01-26-2006 05:25 PM

Mahavishnu is just awesome music. John Mclaughlin was the first shred player.

jazzfromhell 01-26-2006 10:58 PM

Yeah, Mahavishnu's a great band, probably the best non-Miles fusion group, in my opinion (interestingly enough, almost all notable fusion groups had ex-Miles Davis sidemen as leaders). I'm not a huge fusion fan (outside of Miles' stuff, Bitches Brew is my favorite album), but early Mahavishnu Orchestra is some fine stuff indeed. I've only got Inner Mounting Flame, I'll get Birds of Fire one of these days. McLaughlin's one of my favorite guitarists.

And I also, despite listening to mostly jazz these days, still listen to **** like the White Stripes (not too big of a fan of **** like System of a Down, but everyone's got a right to listen to whatever **** they want ;) ).

Croog 01-27-2006 03:50 PM

I'm sure they are on MySpace.

riseagainstrocks 01-27-2006 05:47 PM

If you dig billy you should check out the rest of his music. His wiki entry lists his discography:

djchameleon 10-30-2007 08:44 AM

I've heard some of his other work.....my mother's friend wanted me to make a mix cd of his stuff. I'm going to look into seeing if I can purchase some of his work though.

Great!! nice to see someone is still supporting musicians and buying cds (unless you were being sarcastic about "buying" the music.)

djchameleon 11-11-2007 05:37 AM

No, I wasn't being sarcastic about buying his cds.....I have income so I can afford to do so. Especially for artists of his caliber

Kevorkian Logic 11-12-2007 04:26 PM

God, I haven't listened to them in ages. I use to really dig them though.

spyrogyra4lyfe 12-21-2007 12:41 PM

hells yeah, son

:drummer: cobham is god- i love it when he's playing a solo, and his big ass 70s glasses start to slip off of his face, and he readjusts them without missing a beat...

mrbagel3 01-14-2008 03:01 PM

i just got into this band like a few weeks ago. yet another band i can't talk to anyone about cause nobody knows who the heck they are. great stuff though. i love Open Country Joy

anzamatik 01-14-2008 05:07 PM

If you like Mahavishnu Orchestra check out Weather Report (with legendary bass player Jaco Pastorius) and Return to Forever (with Chick Corea and another legendary bassist Stanley Clark)

As is Between Nothingness and Eternity. It was the first album I heard from them and it's a live one... it is completely flawless though, I mistook it for a studio album. :D

jackhammer 01-15-2008 06:19 PM

Sadly this is one of those bands that has passed me by. If only I could hear music 24/7 and not work!

Friday 01-16-2008 12:57 PM

Birds of Fire is very good. I can appreciate it for what it is, even if it does not stimulate me as much as other albums may.

Molecules 02-03-2008 11:55 AM

Last time I visited a close friend in Oxford we had, Birds of Fire blasting out into the street. We were just laughing at how mad it was...where do you draw the line between jazz-influenced prog and jazz fusion? more improv? only here could i ask this question...:D
