Default Trailblazers that are under represented

Everyone knows big named musicians, but what I want to know is the trail blazers that didn't get enough credit, the people that helped pave the way for the big names to get where they are. Who is your unsung hero and why?

Jaco Pastorius was (IMO) the Hendrix of bass, he's in the Jazz Hall of Fame and has songs named after him and people love him and credit him, but I think he should be more known. He ended up living on the streets in New York and Fort Lauderdale. He was beaten to death by a bouncer in 1987 D: (R.I.P)
