I can't say much about Avant Jazz, but Free was a great band.

RAJADA (PEDRO SOUSA/ MIGUEL MIRA/ AFONSO SIMÕES)
Pedro Sousa is a Portuguese student of Evan Parker and it shows. In keeping with a fantastic tradition of brilliant aggressive jazz. https://multikultiproject.bandcamp.com/album/rajada Recommended |
First Offence (Live in London) / Sticks and Stones (Live in Bristol) by Dave Jackson and Wayne Rex
https://muteantsoundsnetlabel.bandca...ive-in-bristol Solid dynamic free jazz. Alto saxophonist, Dave Jackson, and drummer, Wayne Rex communicate and respond to each other with skillful sensitivity. Keeping it a duet allows Jackson plenty of room to express himself and he fills up the space with a powerful voice and Rex is right on cue with explosive and exciting drum work. Recommended |
jazz music stops (live at Crystal Palace) by cgi jesus
Instrumental jazz punk probably influenced by bands like Universal Congress Of, Gone, and the Minutemen as well as Zorn and maybe Brötzmann. http://cgijesus.bandcamp.com/album/j...crystal-palace The bassist, Kevin Eichenberger, takes credit for the song writing. He and the alto playing Garen Dorsey provide all the listening credibility this band offers on this recording. The highlights mostly come when Dorsey steers away from the avant garde and experiments with a more modal sound. In order for this to really pull off the jazz punk thing they would need to find a much better drummer than James "Pweedledido" Gibian who fails to hold the band together, form a base, and frankly, to excite the listener. As for the guitar, Brett Jones offers nothing to this performance. At best, I can say he doesn’t completely ruin it. I have my doubts about how deep the talent pool runs in Richmond. |

The Eric Plaks New Trio - Sun & Shadow Pretty traditional free jazz a la Cecil Taylor, Coltrane, and Cecil Taylor done well. |

Ja it's dope. Sounds a lot like Cecil with Sunny Murray. Maybe even a little von Schippenbach in there at times.

It's more avant garde than Jazz.

matt booth and the palindromes
Matt Booth & Palindromes | Breakfast for Dinner Records The best I can tell this a debut release from a New Orleans jazz outfit. Not very deep into the realm of the free but quite soulful in the modal tradition and not afraid to delve into the atonal. Contains three originals and four (I’m going to go ahead and use the term) standards (two by Paul Motian). Even though Booth is the bassist this kind of reminds me Bill Frisell’s good stuff. Hope this band sees more success. They deserve it. Recommended |
Spoiler for album art:
Thomas Strønen, Time Is A Blind Guide. Lucus. Thomas Strønen is a Norwegian drummer and composer. This record is on ECM (Edition of Contemporary Music) but he is well-documented on Rune Grammofon. Rune Grammofon, which is based out of Oslo, has had a distribution deal with ECM, which is based in Munich. Both labels command respect but Rune is more grassroots. It’s a name I’ve associated with great music since the 90s. ECM is often distributed by the big boys (Warner Brothers etc). Time is a Blind Guide is Strønen‘s band. His latest addition, 31 year old Japanese pianist Ayumi Tanaka, might be his brightest star. Her work on this album is superb. The chemistry is perfect all around but Tanaka’s confident addition takes this to the next level. https://static1.squarespace.com/stat...3/?format=500w This is a great record and is recommended for everyone. The music is thematic and on the less abrasive side of free jazz and avant garde music in general. 5/5 Stars. |

Brian Chase, Rob Reich, Ben Goldberg - Title of Work Mad excellent, can't find any links but it's on Spots. Features interesting use of what I think is a melodica. |

Spoiler for album art:
The Other Side of Time by Quin Kirchner I’m very enthusiastic about this release. This could end up being one of my favorites this year, in fact. It combines the party feel a large street ensemble with the intimacy of an excellent band busting at the seems with excitement for bop pushing the boundaries into free. This is deeply Chicago in spirit but listening to this record gets you pumping like if you’re hoping around the outskirts of the French Quarter and bump into a band that’s like ten times better than anything you expected to see. Kirchner is the percussionist and occasionally reminds the listener why it’s his band with some fantastic drum grooves. The album includes standards (and I’m intentionally using that word) by Paul Motian, Andrew Hill, Sun Ra, and Mingus. All tracks, original or not, rage. Finally, the definitive Art Ensemble of Chicago flag is on full display here. These guys are ****ing torch bearers. Bass clarinet and flute both going off at the same time, yes sir! Absolutely deep dish delicious. Major props! |

Teenage Burnout - los (February 9, 2018) Quote:
Improvisational free jazz from a trio whose web presence appears to be limited to self-promotion. Hopefully, this recording picks up some steam. Their sound mostly stems from the Ornette tradition. I especially like the discipline on display by Stewart-Robinson. He plays free JAZZ. No funk/punk fusion bull****. He molds his playing to the style and doesn’t let the nature of the instrument override the mood or the sound. Not the spiciest or heaviest chops but good music that successfully accomplishes what it sets out to do. From the notes it doesn’t appear like these guys are working together regularly. That’s too bad. I think there’s more potential here. https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7140/7...98d84e31_z.jpg Edit: a couple weeks later I found this review on another record involving Josh Sinton http://www.freejazzblog.org/2018/02/...cords.html?m=1 Quote:

I know that the life I’m currently living is unsustainable but for the time being scouring for new free jazz releases available for online streaming every ****ing day is the most gratifying way I’ve spent my time in ages. This came out today.
william hooker trio remembering https://hookertrio.bandcamp.com/releases No pussyfooting here. Strait up all three musicians absolutely shred on this record. I’m sorry for being a broken record but it’s hard to come up with **** to say. 5/5. Will be a contender for AOTY - by me at least. Spoiler for cassette:

Susana Santos Silva - All the Rivers – Live at Panteão Nacional (Clean Feed, 2018) Those who take interest in how the musicians of Evan Parker: September Winds dealt with the challenges and unique opportunities of recording in an empty water reservoir will likely find themselves intrigued with the challenging acoustics of Lisbon’s Church of Santa Engrácia where this brilliant and beautiful work was recorded. Also like September Winds, All the Rivers is contemporary classical third stream free jazz. Dig on it when you get the chance. 5/5 https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped..._Fora_zoom.JPG Igreja de Santa Engrácia Panteão Nacional |
