The International Cultural Exchange
Given that in my time here i`ve spoken to people from all over the world. I thought it would be good if we could ask each other questions about each others countries & also how our countries are portrayed by others.
So anyway i`ll start this off by asking any Americans here to answer the following questions........ 1. Everytime there is a visiting American president in the UK there is a lot of talk about the 'special relationship' between the two countries , do you feel any closer to the UK than say for example any other country? 2. In the last Football World Cup , the USA had their best ever tournament & got to the quarter finals, do you care & did you watch any of the matches? 3. Which British band do you feel has had the most impact in the U.S. in say the last 5 or 6 years? 4. When you think of the UK , what is the first image that comes into your head? 5. David Beckham is probably the biggest British sports star around the world , are you aware of him & what he does? |
1. No.
2. No. 3. Oasis, no lie. 4. British flag. 5. Soccer player who bangs Spice Girls, got it. But yeah..like I'm not actually an American. Canadian in America. So do or don't listen to my replies. |
1. No
2. Didn't they lose to Germany in the Quarters? I do follow soccer. 3. Sadly, Green Day. 4. the Union Jack 5. Possibly the best free kick taker in the sport |

Do Americans really believe that many english people have bad teeth?
|
Do Americans really not have sherbet?? (Sorry, its just been bugging me for ages)
|
Do british people really have tea and crumpets?
Mmmm sherbert And just for the record, over here, david beckham gets more publicity for being hot, rich, with a spice girl, and allkinds of other crap that have nothing to do with soccer. By the looks of what is shown on tv, i never would have known he played sports if someone hadnt told me. |
Crumpets are vile , it`s like stale bread filled with fat
|
Oh yeah, and do americans really think canadians live in igloos, cause this dumb bitch in florida asked me that, and then proceeded to laugh at me for using sleighs as transportation And she wasnt even joking.
|
i see this is actually an american-brittish cultural exchange thread

Question for adidasss.
What does the average Croatian think of the 'typical' Englishman? |
Quote:
In Doctor Who the most famous race of aliens are the daleks... http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...x-Daleknew.jpg In every Doctor Who reference book i`ve ever read it says Dalek means 'Far & distant thing' in Serbo-Croat. Is this true? |
first of all, no offence, but i don't appreciate the use of the word serbo-croatian, yes , our languages are almost identical, but for reasons known to you i'd appreciate it if you didn't use that term anymore....now to answer your question, yes, that is correct
right-track....we only have contacts with rich tourists that come here so the average croatian's perception of english people is that they're all white like cheese and have a lot of money and class....of course, i know that's not true;) question, does the average brittish person know croatia exists? have you seen any pictures of croatia?have you ever heard of general Gotovina?....there's no point in asking the same from our american friends, from personal experience on this site, they have no clue croatia exists or where it is....i'm curious about the brittish because we're on the same continent so you would expect them to know, but as i have seen with my own 2 eyes, the french have no clue that croatia exists....which is quite shocking.... |

that's ok....i'm just saying...when i see that word i cringe....
|
oh, the reason i asked my questions is also because the average croatian is i think aware that brittish people still think yugoslavia exists....either that or they still think it's unsafe to come here because there was a war here......like 10 years ago....
|
General Gotovina is wanted for war crimes isn't he?
And yes adidasss, the average Englishman is aware of Croatia's existence and know it as member of the former Yugoslavia. However, it would be fair to say that the average Englishman is unaware of Croatia's history and the part it played in the 'troubles' in the Balkans. |
what do people think of the war that went on here? both brittish and american ( although, i know i wont get any answer from the american members because they are mostly teenagers and were babies when it went on )
let me take this oportunity to explain my signiture, carla is Carla del Ponte, chief prosecutor of the Hague tribunal, for years the woman has opstructed us entering the EU because of one man who is acused of war crimes ( nevermind that the indictment is totaly bogus ) and our inability to catch him, in the past few months she has gone so far as to say that the catholic church is hiding him and has went to vatican and asked the pope to stop doing that....which in my opinion only shows that the woman is not all there....so finally, a month ago she said that croatia is cooperating with the Hague tribunal fully.... |
My memories of the war was that is was a confusing mess with atrocities committed by all sides.
Arkan's tigers spring to mind and the horror that was Srebrenica. |
one of the reasons i asked that because i fear that because of all this Gotovina buisness the international comunity is going to start equating the croats and the serbs and make our war for independace ilegitimate.....

Hey I just found out Andrew Bogut is Croatian, so that may not be entirely true, adidass.

That's brilliant! Only on special occasions then? How about scones, danish pastries and custard tarts?
|
Scones = pure greatness. But Ive never tried a custard tart, and danish pastries are nuttin special... I hope you pronounce scones the right way? As in "scoooones" not "sconnes" ?
=/ Yeah I cant spell phonetically... So shoot me. |
Never tried a custard tart? They're the ones that are sold in Marks and Spencers as 'Egg Custard Tarts' (for those people who thought maybe it was custard made from something else??). I'd recommend trying them, pastry goodness.
I'd agree that danish pastries are pretty mediocre, its just that I got force-fed them by my family whenever I go home. Yes. I do pronouce 'scone' the right way (sc-oh-nu! with an 'oh' in the middle). Do you think the US contingent will be reading this in shock? Muffins and scones and tea! Lets all go have luncheon in the parlour chaps and chapesses. |
As long as they don't think we all say "spiffing" and "jolly good" at random moments then Im happy :)
