Great idea. Guess I should also eat more gorgonzola cheese and touch some more electrified fences. I might have been too quick to judge those experiences.

Seriously though, I've watched tonnes of horror movies and then one day I just realized that the genre is not for me. I can mention almost none that I liked.

Gorgonzola is (1) gross and (2) more consistent than horror.

So...what do you think of The Shining?

And The Exterminating Angel isn't a comedy.

That's one of those very few horror movies that I straight up love.
It's Kubrick, so that helps. I love the acting, the soundtrack, the way it is filmed... There are so many great moments in that movie. I've even got the Stephen King novel on my shelf. Haven't read it yet since, no surprise, I don't read horror - so I need to force myself a bit. I watched the movie again recently and loved it so much that I wanted to see how different things are in the book...

Other horror movies of some sort that I straight up love:

Alien
Dracula (the Coppola movie)
The Thing (Carpenter's version, of course)
Arachnophobia
Ghost Busters (ok that one is a stretch)

Twixt was an allright late career Coppola movie. Pretty interesting and unusual.

This BBC produced Dracula movie was also quite decent:
Dracula (TV Movie 2006) - IMDb

So I like a few, but those are basically it, out of hundreds. The problem is that I'm not really interested in the horror part of the equation. None of the movies above are scary at all.

See that's why you gotta watch more horror because those are all landmark horror movies who have a legacy of films that they influenced.

I don't know of any movies that manage to do what I loved so much about those mentioned above.

Perhaps Dante 01 is an exception. There is no monster, it isn't horror, but it does feel like Alien in certain ways. Quite a good, weird little sci-fi movie:
Dante 01 (2008) - IMDb

You should watch The Babadook and The Witch.

Maybe my brother has them on disc, so I could borrow them with a little luck. But I'll want to watch a trailer first and see if I'll even bother. Usually what happens is that people try to make me watch some supposedly brilliant horror movie, then I cave in and watch it, then I inevitably hate it and they feel disappointed. My brother has a ton of horror movies but stopped bothering recommending any years go.
