It's my opinion that U.S. involvment in the middle east is to avoid being reliant on Saudi oil.
Imagine if the Saudi royal family lost power to some religious fanatical organisation that was anti-American.

Why does it matter that russia is closer? Theres bad blood between soviets and the middle east last I checked. Also, Russia doesn't have a two million man army that goose steps in perfect unison.

It's not about, who has, how much oil. It's about who controls/has access of middle eastern oil.

our involvement in ww2 basically put us full-force involved in european politics and the rest of the world politics. it got us very involved with the creation of israel and because of that involvement we are what we are today with israel.
