I am yet to fail (UK exams)

So, today was the AS and A2 exam results. Some people know whether they're into their Universities or not, others will know how much they need to work for the following year.

I got a C - Psychology, B - Sociology and B - History in my ASs, so I'll need to pull each of them up a grade in the following year to be satisfied and get into the Uni I want (I think, I forget the requirements). That said it's a lot better than I expected so I'm satisfied.

How has everyone else done?

Cheese 08-18-2006 07:00 AM

What's sociology?

DontRunMeOver 08-18-2006 07:34 AM

Sociology is the study of society, the way that people act and interact within society and the things that influence them in their actions. There are lots of famous, detailed theories which people have put forward and which are much more difficult to prove or disprove than those in the sciences... so there's plenty for sociology students to discuss.

What are you planning to study at uni, Fal? (you're name's Sam, right?)

Barnard17 08-18-2006 10:36 AM

Yeah, my names Sam. I'm planning to study Politics at Uni. Not too sure where I'll take it, maybe get a career in the media. To be fair though, University is about the parties, not the learning ;)

Sound Devastation 08-18-2006 10:56 AM

what uni do you want to go to?

i remember getting A-Levels last year. scariest experience ever.

Levithan 08-18-2006 11:03 AM

I got CDDD...And im off to uni in a month...Well exited

andy 08-18-2006 11:11 AM

I want to go to UWE. It's quite good for Politics, but everyone walks around going "ooh no you don't want UWE you want to aim high", so I'm going to apply for a bunch of others at the same time so that I look ambitious ;) UWE are also known to be good at supporting their undergrads, unlike Oxford and Cambridge.

Ma Cherie 08-18-2006 12:09 PM

it akin to SATs over here, either type one or 2
it type one i one whole test on math algebra writeinig and reading comprehension

type 2 id subject based....

i passed mine with ahigh score, enougth to get in to almost any uni i want, but they go by grades to.....

TrampInaTux 08-19-2006 02:23 AM

I didn't know you were British. Now I've got even more of a reason to come to your house and kick the **** out of you ;)

Cheese 08-19-2006 05:36 AM

I could never see the point in exams or university. I left school at 15 and went straight into a job, but all the "I'm gonna go to university and better myself" lot I went to school with are mostly on the dole.

Just an observation.

ArtistInTheAmbulance 08-19-2006 05:41 AM

agreed. & at the risk of sounding like those military enlisting adverts, it is actually the experience that counts.
all the exams show is that you have the ability to learn, i guess.
ohwell, im far too lazy to get out into the real world yet, im happy here.

Cheese 08-19-2006 05:45 AM

Exackery, my brother can give you a detailed description on paper of how to do something, but when it comes to the practical side, he's shafted.
It took him 18 goes before he passed his practical drivers licence and even now he still cannot change a flat tyre.

tdoc210 08-19-2006 05:57 AM

aha.. alternate word uses.. pfft standaedized tests are easy, wot you have to worry about over here a shihte teachers who know nothing or little about the subject they are teaching.

Alo 08-19-2006 06:09 AM

Oeh this reminds me of something. When I'm finished with school in Holland, I want to go to a university in London. Are there any? And do you get a pass which enables you to use the transport cheaper? Cuz it's like that over here.

Sound Devastation 08-19-2006 06:53 AM

there are alot of universities in london!

im not sure about London travel passes, but living and studying in London is EXPENSIVE (rent can be almost 4 times the rent in places like manchester).

id recommend saving some cash and looking at other big cities. Birmingham, Manchester, Nottingham, Leeds... all have ace universities, awesome shopping, awesome nightlife and their share of job opportunities.

unless you want to do Law... then London is a good option.

Mr Sensitive 08-19-2006 07:02 AM

My older brother is going to a uni in London, but it sounds awful because you're not allowed alcohol on the grounds.

Sound Devastation 08-19-2006 07:06 AM

hahahaha that sucks.

my uni campus has 13 cheap bars. ooh yeah.

See, this is why I like UWE. On the open day they basically said "So yeah, you guys are basically going to get to know a massive number of people to start off with because you'll be having parties pretty much every night. And when things have settled down and you're sober enough to make it out of the student accomodation we have the Student Union bars where you can buy cheap alcohol, though we do stop serving you when you get paraplegic because it's more a government regulation issue regarding that. Lets be fair it's only a few hundred yards to the accomodation and you probably have a few cans in the fridge anyway."

What?!? 18 goes?!?!? I'm not sure that you can blame university for such amazing levels of inability. As for the flat tyre thing, its not like being at uni somehow gives you magical powers of avoiding getting flat tyres. Admittedly, I've helped change a few flat tyre before and have now forgotten how to do it, so maybe it does have some effect...

Ah, awesome.

I don't plan on going to Uni though.

Not law for me!

I'll look into those other cities. Thankies! :)

No prizes for guessing which Uni I'd recommend Alo.

MoonlitSunshine 08-19-2006 04:13 PM

Are there prizes for not guessing?

Nope...only a smack in the mouth for being a smartarse. ;)

MoonlitSunshine 08-19-2006 04:16 PM

ah well, it's better than a warning!

Hmmm, uni. Haven't thought about it that much, although I'll probably end up doing maths, hopefully in Trinity.

right-track 08-19-2006 04:20 PM

Trinity College Dublin or Cambridge?

Sound Devastation 08-19-2006 04:21 PM

i recommend Nottingham to everyone. :)

and no you wont get shot. the papers love hyping up the fact that nottingham has rough areas. SO DOES EVERY OTHER CITY! grrr.

its a lovely place really - far more interesting to live in than oxford and cambridge :p

Is the girl/boy ratio still in favour of the men there?

I passed my 'A's a long time back and had the chance to go to Uni, but I decided to fuck my life up and go backpacking instead...best thing I ever did.

MoonlitSunshine 08-19-2006 04:34 PM

Yeah, I think all this pressure to go to college or university is stupid. It just doesn't suit some people. YOu can't go to college and learn how to be an amazing carpenter, you need a master of sorts. It suits me, but I know so many people who would actually be better off not going onto 3rd level, and just do what they like instead.

right-track 08-19-2006 04:40 PM

I do regret not going though, only I know I would have messed up somewhere along the line anyways. It's a recurring theme in my life that I seem to have little control over.
My wife went to Lancaster and came away with an English degree and she earns more than I do now as a Librarian.
So I often wonder how things would have turned out for me...having said that I wouldn't change a thing. Travelling was the time of my life and I would have regretted not doing that for sure.

MoonlitSunshine 08-19-2006 04:44 PM

Yeah, in the the words of Silverchair "Mistakes Don't Mean a thing if you don't regret them" People always go on about how they wish they could go back in time to change some things they did in the past, but who knows how many good things came out of that one bad decision? Every cloud has a silver lining, and sometimes the lining is pretty damn thick.

Barnard17 08-19-2006 04:45 PM

I agree that the government should work towards encouraging apprenticeships, recreate a guild system and make it clear that craftwork and less acumen requiring jobs are equally viable. Frankly, I think a Uni is right up my street. That said I'm not going to "better myself", I'm going to be a manwhore and get drunk every night ;)

Oh, and to complain about debt.

right-track 08-19-2006 04:47 PM

Just go backpacking instead...it's the same as manwhoring and getting drunk every night without the hassle of studying. ;)

Speaking of which, I hear debts of around £32,000 are normal for a Uni stint these days...

jibber 08-19-2006 11:05 PM

I dont think i'll ever be the "uni" type. Sure in 3 years i'll have a diploma in photojournalism, but it's not exactly a very taxing program. Plus, I have a very strong feeling that I'll never really settle down into living in the real world. Most likely I'll graduate and then just continue traveling and skiing, only i'll probably be able to get a few higher paying jobs that are a bit more fun and interesting than working retail or waiting tables.

Zaza 08-20-2006 12:55 AM

I want to go right away so as to get it out of the way.... I know what I want to do, biology, so aside from the inevitable major change, I'm not too worrried about what I'm doing. ;)
I'm also going to be renting a house with two girls from my hometown, too, so that's definitely good incentive right there. :D

I'm thinking that if I go right away, I can graduate young (22-23) and still enjoy travelling, but with a degree in my pocket and without university looming over my head!

I can imagine mate, I wish I'd done something first. I'm definitely going to try and go after University.

And it must be said, theres hundreds of people out there with degrees that have far worse jobs than people who have no degree and went straight into employment.

In many cases experiance will beat a qualification.

And it might just be me, but I'm finding first year at Uni dead boring.
