I tried MediaMonkey but it didn't start as fast as i would like. also it is not free but shareware. It started to nag me after a few weeks about buying the full version when I performed certain functions (like rip CD's to mp3).

I like Foobar because its lite weight and only does what you need it to. And if you need more there is usually a plugin for it.

If you want a truly free program similar to Mediamonkey, try Songbird.

First of all, fuck Songbird. The only good thing about that is it finds concerts for you. I don't know what you're talking about Dustguru, but for me Media Monkey is open and working in under a minute, with about 1500 albums. I have every single bit of album art and tagging too, that would have slaughtered Itunes. Also MM lets me have FLAC files and stuff, and it's easier to sync my ipod as it's album based and not song based. Also it isn't slow and retarded. =/

and under a minute isn't as fast as i would like, then again i'm the guy who deactivates parts of his OS because it doesn't start fast enough with them on. I'm looking for under 10 seconds.

I agree that songbird is not that great (again slow to start) but it is closer to the full featured out of the box sort of thing that MM is. Mediamonkey is a fine program too. Flac support is nice.

I've used foobar2000 for a few years now. It's perfect at what I want it to do, play music. I don't want visualizations, I don't want to play games or watch videos, I just want a music player with a small footprint that can manage my library.

For smaller, one off plays, I use Billy. It's footprint is about the size of the mp3 it's currently playing. It's a bare bones player with no frills, but it's a great mp3 player: Billy - Sheep Friends
