Anyway, I'm with Oojay. Comedy Central has thrown out some nice series and I absolutely love American stand-up. Comedy Central also pushes the boundries with much of what they do. South Park(already mentioned) is simply genius and Drawn Together(Athough I HATE IT) really pushes buttons. I also am a fan of Simpsons, Futurama, Family Guy, Aqua Teen Hunger Force and a few other animated shows. I love dry humor like the short-lived Showtime series Dead Like Me. Of course nothing can beat Monty Python, EVER! I try to be as worldly as I can and as far as what I like, it's 50/50 depends on my mood, but Comedy Central is there and waiting for me so my exposure level is 90 percent American comedy. |

Jesus, Oojay are you thick or do you just like pointless arguements?
A shows run is classed as when it`s originally aired for the first time, For example Doctor Who ran from 1963-1989 , it was shown all over the world in loads of countries after 1989 but nobody classed it as a current show , because it wasn`t being made. Clear now? |

Oh and it`s been shown in Britain for years. |
American movies and tv fails apart from Kevin Smith and Cartoons. I'd take the take the best American comics over the best British comics any day.

I like both, actually. It's so broad, you can't classify an entire market of an entire country, for the past century to another country's.
It's like comparing crabs and whales. Fishy. -hahahahahahaaaa- |
I Don't like much american comedy... pretty much just Family Guy and Bill Hicks.
British comedy... i love The League of Gentlemen, The Mighty Boosh, Alan Partridge, NATHAN BARLEY!, Dylan Moran.. even Nighty Night and Two pints of lager and a packet of crisps. i absolutely HATE little britain though (and the all-female Tittybangbang). what is funny about the same 10 or so sketches repeated over and over? |

I think I pretty much agree with the first post in this thread.
I have to say though, that after reading a bunch of forums I'm surprised at the reactions to the two versions of The Office. I've seen a lot of Americans saying that the American version of The Office is great, and that they hated (they probably used stonger words here) the British version. Myself, well, I didn't like the first episode of the American version (I'm a huge British version fan), but as I've watched a few more episodes it is slowly growing on me, but there is definitely that slightly more conservative feel. Also, if feels like everything in the American version has to be explicit and explained to the viewer in dialogue. |
Peep Show just takes a little getting used to, after that you'll love it. Also check out Look Around You, Brass Eye, 'Allo 'Allo, Trigger Happy TV, Green Wing, Mighty Boosh, Shameless, Teachers, Extras, Black Books, Garth Marenghis Dark Place ... there's loads of awesome British Comedy. Not so much American (seriously, Arrested Development, Scrubs, and a few cartoons that get stretched to an unbelievable quantity of episodes. What else do you have though? Very little innovation or progression.)
|
Scrubs is good, but the constant narration gets a little annoying.
|
I forgot about Teachers , that was an excellect show. Shame it`s not being made anymore :(

Allo Allo is antient, they're actually doing a rerun on the national telly...I thought it was funny when I was 5...not so much now... I preffer the cheaky bastard sort of comedies a la "Blackadder" or " The new statesman" ( Rick Mayall is a fucking genious! ) |

IMO, Peep Show didn't REALLY pick up until series 2. Allo Allo is more taking the piss out of the French, but it was irreverant and progressive. Little Britain dropped in Season 2 and was practically out of it in Season 3. You'd like Rock Profile though, by the same people.

Being English im going to say British comedy really arent i. I grew up on shows such as Alan Partridge, The Office, Extra's, Little Britian, Rob Brydon's Analy Retentive etc etc, i love how subtle British humour is, it doesnt rely on shock value or 'jokes' to get a reaction out of people, its humour is in the intelligence of the scripts, the situations and the acting. Quite often little is more in British comedy.
That said there is American comedy that really makes me laugh. Curb Your Enthusiasm is pure genius, but again to me its a very British style of comedy, not disimiliar from the Office (UK). |
I can't recall any British Comedy unless Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz count... and those are hilarious.
|
Just noticed this. I did'nt know Americans did comedy....:D and if you get that then you get British comedy.
|
^^It's easy to spot a joke on American TV, JH, there is a laughter track just after one.
|
I thought it was a groan :D
|
They play that over the groans.
|
The best of British comedy compared to the worst of American comedy ITT.
|
I've been watching Gavin & Stacy a lot recently. Dunno why though.
|
I have completely missed that. Like I usually do with new series.
|
I'd love to watch an American watch Garth Marenghi's Dark Places ;)
