Is this the end (of the world as we know it)?:sings:

All across Europe, spring weather for the past few weeks with temperatures up to 20 degrees Celsius, across the globe in America ice storms unseen in the past 50 years, down under heat waves and bush fires. And now there's a hurricane apparently heading our way. Is this global warming finally showing it's here to stay or just mother nature being a cyclical bitch?

Do you believe in global warming? American scientists don't naturally, because America is the worlds biggest polluter and powerful enough to show the middle finger to the Kyoto treaty.

What is more important, keeping a high level of industrial growth, securing jobs and a high standard of living for the present or ensuring a (good) future for generations to come?

What are you doing to help save the planet?*gives you the evils*[Little Britain reference]

sleepy jack 01-18-2007 12:30 PM

I skateboard everywhere.

Also this weather is ridiculous, i'm tired of all this snow. :(

Though I have managed to almost write my name in the snow, not once but twice. It took some practice, alot of times I would waste too much on the E, but I eventually made it to Eth.

swim 01-18-2007 12:32 PM

Most American Scientists support the "theory" [it isn't a theory it's fact!] of global warming. It's the press that runs the crazy people's reports. And there are a bunch of individual cities that support the Kyoto treaty dispite America's as a whole's idiocy. I wish we started making more hybrid cars and had a good public transportation system.

Insightful and enlightening as always.

Swim, global warming is just a theory!:D Seriously, despite the fact that it's relatively easy to prove the planet's climate is changing, I think it isn't so easy to prove humans are (solely) responsible for it. As we've all learned, our planet has gone though numerous such changes, most of which were much more dramatic than those we're experiencing right now. I remember hearing about some research about the effect underwater volcanic gas emissions have on global warming and the ozone layer. Surely we couldn't have made such an impact in such a short period of time?

None were as dramatic as the ones now actually.

I beg to differ, unless you call the various ice ages undramatic.;)

Quite right, infact, one cow is more pollutant than the average car.

Edit: Although I do think Global Warming is more than just a theory, I do think it has some proof about it. I mean unless the sun is all of a sudden burning hotter, I find it strange that after thousands of years these icebergs have decided to start rapidly melting.

sleepy jack 01-18-2007 01:00 PM

We should kill them commies.

Alo 01-18-2007 01:01 PM

We had the wettest august in years, it is way too warm to be winter. And we have the strongest windforces! They're almost hurricanes!

And this is not normal for Holland...

I always believed in global warming, but I think it really is showing right now. The only thing I do about it is taking my bike everywhere, instead of having my parents bring me with the car. And I close my window to keep warmth inside, instead of turning up the heat.

Just too bad that I seem to be one of few who even take such slight measures...

MURDER JUNKIE 01-18-2007 01:02 PM

So far I have taken the exhaust off of my SUV, sprayed two cans of hairspray into the environment, and killed a puppy

just tryin' to do my part..................................but the puppy thing was just for fun :)

Have you looked at the charts? Some scientists went to Antartica and drilled out this huge thing of ice and they could picked it apart and tell the temperature of the year and the amount of co2 in the air. And there was this huge graph of the pass 600 million years and nothing was as dramatic as the past 50 years.

Also the co2 levels and temperture were in direct porportion for 600 million years.

I don't know about you but after seeing that I'm convinced.

Isn't Holland supposed to be ahead of the world in all things, including the care for the environment? I'm sure you have a very advanced recycling system, what about wind power, isn't it highly implemented in Holland?

Well yeah, we do that! But I wasn't only talking about the big scale.

Of course other countries should also take these kind of measures. But the small scales also counts. If every individual just takes the bike instead of the car once in a while, the total would also amount to a great effect...
At least, I like to believe that.

You've missed my point, you are aware that the planet has gone through various ice ages, the most recent of which ended about 30 thousand years ago? You don't find that dramatic? What if this is just a natural prelude to the next ice age? Not impossible.

swim 01-18-2007 01:19 PM

The rate of change in the pass 50 years is greater than the rate of change of an ice age. And if the last iceage was 30,000 years ago we shouldn't have another for 50,000-90,000 years based on past patterns.

No not really, not when you remember the bulk of CO2 emission is due to airplane travel, not when there's a couple of billion of people in China and India who drive cars and don't give a rat's ass about the environment. I try to recycle as much as I can, but I know it doesn't make a difference. It's more so I can say "hey, don't look at me, I recycled" when the shit finally hits the fan.

Sneer 01-18-2007 01:52 PM

today due to winds 7 people have been killed in and around london, a building has fallen down near my way, trees have been uprooted and my neighbours fence fell on a cat. its ridic'

My house is battered to fook.
It's ripped all the guttering down and wrecked half the street...we got off lightly.
2 of those dead are round here. A wall fell on one and another got blown over and died of head injuries.

ZeppelinAir 01-18-2007 02:34 PM

ok there is some truth to global warming, yes the world is getting warmer and the ice is melting, but what i see odd about the global warming thing is that places in the U.S. are getting record low temps. up here in Michigan though we didnt get any snow until about a week ago, yet earlier in December places in Texas got pounded with snow. so that kinda counter acts global warming

Global warming means that the planet's temperature as a whole is growing resulting in spectacular climate changes. Hurricanes in Europe and ice storms in America would fall into that category.

ZeppelinAir 01-18-2007 03:00 PM

but not all of America had the major ice storms and the extreme winter storms that some parts experienced, up here in michigan we didnt have anything close to winter until last Monday, than it hit. its been like this for the last four years or so. so i believe while the temp around the world is riseing, its most likely due to a cycle

proof global warming might be real. how scientific.

k, its -9 degrees here.
and it was **** in december for snow, but there is teh el nino

So what you're trying to say is, because this global phenomenon is not affecting a few square miles of your fair land, it isn't really global?

ZeppelinAir 01-18-2007 03:25 PM

not in that way no, what im sayin is that if its "global" how come not all places are affected. everywhere is experienceing odd weather, its a cycle from the whore which we call mother nature. you cant say that the world is warming because of the polution. if that was the case, then how come ice ages happend and melted. its a cycle, i see more proof of a cycle than global warming

It's called "global" warming because it affects a large portion of our planet, we can't call it "almost global but not really" warming, it just isn't as catchy.;) Pollution is definitely harming the ozone layer, I'm just not certain to what extent.

ZeppelinAir 01-18-2007 03:34 PM

ok, i see what you mean by that, but what confuses me is how that the affected areas seem to change places?

I am also confused, say what? Affected areas seem to change places? I'm gonna need you to elaborate on that one.

swim 01-18-2007 03:36 PM

Wind Currents. More Pollution in some places than other. Some places have more trees than other<

right-track 01-18-2007 03:38 PM

I think he means it seems to effect places at random.

I assume he means he would have thought the effects would have crept gradually South, or North from the poles.
Instead of appearing, seemingly, at odd unexpected places.

ZeppelinAir 01-18-2007 03:40 PM

yes thats pretty much it

adidasss 01-18-2007 03:45 PM

Why would that be confusing? Isn't weather by definition volatile?

tdoc210 01-18-2007 03:46 PM

Yes.
Im a wood elf so i should know >;-{

ZeppelinAir 01-18-2007 03:50 PM

yes it is, its confuseing as in a way that there is no pattern to suggest anything....most weather has pattern, i havent seen anything of that nature though with the affected areas

Kurt_Cobain 01-18-2007 04:06 PM

I remember when America refused to sign that treaty to cut carbon omissions, that pissed me off. But global warming is everyones problem. Did you know that cows are the biggest threat to the ozone with all the methane they release every fart. Its natures fault!
It bothers me, because its getting worse at such a rate, and I feel sorry for these animals that have no idea why their habitats are dissapearing.

That ones being sorted...apparently Kangaroos are the only mammal that doesn't fart. Something to do with a chemical they produce.

Once they work out how to introduce it to the cow..."Bob's yer uncle".

I hope Global warming takes you, and you alone.

Im in and out today and can't throw in my two cents yet, but it seemed early on people were saying the word "theory" as a negitive thing. If its science and it can't be proved to happen in every instance, then it can't be scientific law. Global warming can't be isolated as the only reason for the current events so its still a theory.

Its not a bad thing, Relativity is still a theory.

Also, we are emerging from from an ice age. Humans are clearly ruining things, I believe that, to what degree? I don't know, but we need to change a great many things....more to come.
