A partition is ... it's like how a hard drive knows that it's a hard drive I guess. You can put multiple partitions on a hard drive, and you need a separate partition for each OS. For each partition you have your compy will read a separate hard drive regardless of the actual set up. If the partition is ballsed you need to go through the process of whiping your hard drive (formatting) so that you can do a clean install of windows. Mikey no doubt knows more than me, I've taken to being a nerd only part time so anything much deeper goes over my head.

If you can get it to read, it should set up normally. Steer clear of the full install and run the repair before anything else. With Windows XP, you should have 3 free tech support calls. If the computer was pre built (HP, Gateway, Dell, Compaq.....) you will need to contact the company that built it. If you purchased Windows XP to install yourself, you get the free calls. It just takes alot of hold time and it is normally a toll call (they reserve the 800 number for paying customers). Good luck.

Why need an external CD-Drive? I'm not sure if external drives are read by the BIOS or the OS, if it's read by the BIOS on start up then yes, if it is a partition issue, however you would also lose all your information on the computer. When starting up you'll need to set the BIOS to read from the CD-Drive before the Hard-Drive so that it'll boot straight into the windows install screen. Do this by tapping the delete key as soon as the computer is starting up and then find it in the BIOS settings.

Safe mode doesnt work, i tried it, neither does any of the other safe modes(with networking, etc) I also tried the "last point that worked good option" no help....

When my windows were ****ed up, I tried repairing them and it gave me the same messages, like half a dozen files it couldn't find (even though they were on the cd). I just had to reinstall them.

Question. Other than browse the internet and listen to music, what do you plan to do with a mac mini?
