Default winrar
When I download a song or album it always comes up a rar file, but I don't know how to decode it. It says something about entering in a product key but I don't have one.....Help!!!

when you rar files you can choose to key in a password or not,
if there is one, itll be on the site you downloaded it from.
if its freealbumdatabase, when theres a password, itll say what it is on the page that takes you to the download link.

It's from albumbase and you choose to save it or download it....I click save and when I open it saomething like a microsoft office thing comes up and says "to decode enter a 15 digit product key." The codes they give me aren't 15 digits.

Let's start off with the basics. First off you have to obtain a program entitled Winrar. This basically acts as a compression/extraction device. If you download a file that is compressed into a winrar file, this program will allow you to extract the desired files. If you wish to share files you have with others, you can compress them into a single file to be uploaded (thats coming up).

To obtain the program, click here. Downloading is free and easy. Just follow the steps.

Once you've downloaded and installed the program, now let's go over the basics of winrar.

To upload:
Open winrar as a program and search for a folder of music you'd like to upload to share with the rest of the glorious listeners at purevolume. A note for the less tech-savvy: all the files must be in a single folder. But if you have scattered files that you don't want to put in one folder you can just highlight each individual file and archive them by right clicking and selecting "Add to archive". So don't compress your entire itunes library into one folder to be uploaded. Just find the band by browsing your music folders until you find a band or album you want to upload. Click on the file ONCE and click the giant ADD button at the top of the program window. From there it will bring you up to a progress window and will tell you when its compressed. From there, go to an upload site (my personal favorite Free File Hosting Made Simple - MediaFire ) and click "browse". From there find the folder the folder you want to upload is in and search for your compressed file (should most likely be of the same name, but it should look like a stack of books) and click the ok button. From there maybe give a short description of what it is (album/artist) and click the "I Agree to the terms and conditions" button and click upload. A progress screen should go on the site (NOTE: pressing back or going to a new site from this screen will halt your uploading). When completed post the link on our wonderful forums for all to enjoy!

Downloading: Click on a link someone else has provided and either wait for the countdown to be finished and the file should be ready to download, or click the "download now" button if available. From there save the compressed file into whatever folder you like. When the downloading is complete, double click the compressed file (like I said earlier, should look like a stack of books bound by a belt). From there you will be able to click and drag the folder out and upload to whatever music listening program you have. In 40 days or so it will tell you to buy it. IGNORE THIS COMMAND! Just click close and you will be able to extract it like before. A ****ty failsafe indeed.
