God-damn it! What is it with cyclists? They think the idea of using the road is a suggestion rather than a necessity? Today, standing at the bus stop, no less than three cyclists passed me, and each one thought he or she had the right of way, and I should move! Hey *******! There's a reason it's called the sidewalk! Get back on the road where you belong! If I were to walk out in the road and make annoyed gestures at cars to get out the way, do you think they would? You like the path so much, bloody walk! I should be safe if I'm not on the road, not looking out for the likes of you!

I don't know how it is there, but here you can get ticketed or fined for riding your bike on the sidewalk. It happened to me once. You can only ride on park trails/paths or the street.

Apparently my mom once got stopped for speeding on a bike. Some cops just have way too much time on their hands.

Yeah, move it or lose it buddy!

:p:

I usually make an effort to give people walking the right of way when I "Have To" take the sidewalk. Which is only on a few 45mph roads around here anyway.

There's no hard and fast rule, as in, you're not prohibited to ride a bike on the pavement/sidewalk, but you're not supposed to. I mean, think of it: you're on a vehicle which can just as easily cause injury if it hits you. What if it's a small child you hit, or a dog? Or worse, a fifty-year-old curmudgeon who's so busy shaking his fist at the last cyclist as he disappears in the distance that he doesn't see you until it's too late? Now you got yourself a lawsuit, buddy!

Oh, and while I'm ranting at cyclists: the traffic lights are for you, too! Just because you CAN breeze through them doesn't mean you do! The amount of bikes I've seen sail through a red light as if somehow if they hit you they're insubstantial or something and it won't matter! Hay-soos!

I've never heard of biking on the footpath being against the law/rules in New Zealand because there is way less population and we are far more relaxed than overseas are.

I think it's technically illegal here, though I don't think anyone would ever bother to ticket you for it. As a walker, it's frustrating to get driven on to someone's lawn by a cyclist, but when they use the bike lanes, it's terrifying trying to make a turn that crosses over their lane. What if they're in your blind spot? It seems to unsafe. I don't like having them in either place. Can't we just give them jetpacks and get on with it?
