It is win for the students. Like dac said, the teachers never teach the full period since it is normally over an hour so you have time to do HW/nothing with the last 20 minutes of class. And since there's only four classes you generaly have less homework. But this is exactly why most schools think block scheduling doesn't work.

We would have 8 classes a semester (7 if you don't count lab) if we switched to block next year...

That's not block scheduling. There were 4 class periods + lunch at my HS.
