Music that makes you dumb

Musicthatmakesyoudumb

Conclusion: If you like whats on the radio, you will bomb your SATs?

Bane of your existence 03-23-2009 08:34 PM

Can someone copy paste this on here? I'm blocked from it at work.

Most of it isn't really pastable.
Just for your info though, Lil Wayne won.

Oh yeah, of course.

Even if the data is accurate, I would venture to say that it's not the music making them dumb... It's just that they're dumb enough to like the music.
Thus, stats.

Janszoon 03-23-2009 11:27 PM

I have to admit I didn't really understand those charts. Obviously my music is making me very dumb.

I didn't understand the first one either. If you go to the Music link on top there's an option for a ranked list. The stats on there are intelligible.

Surell 03-24-2009 12:07 AM

Nickelback in front of Lil Wayne? Nah.

Yea that's a tough cookie to swallow.
Speaking of swallow, I keep hearing that damn Nickelback song on the radio about "so much cuter with something in your mouth", at least I think it's Nickelback... And that damn song sounds like the music from a late 80's juicy fruit commercial. It inevitably leads me to remembering the commercial for that damn "Balzac brat" thing when it came out, which pisses me off irrationally.

Surell 03-24-2009 12:25 AM

I think there's a lot of stuff you could listen to that's less intelligible than Wayne, particularly Soulja Boy stuff or Nickelback and you know. All that jazz.

And I wish I could agree with you, but I have no sort of clue of what you're talkin about.

Freebase Dali 03-24-2009 12:33 AM

I guess you're not old enough to have seen the particular Juicy Fruit commercial I'm talking about, but it was horrid. And probably sexually suggestive. I think that's why they ended up taking it down eventually.
Surprisingly though, I just found the commercial video on Youtube. It's saying 1981, but that's when I was born so I guess it ran for long enough.
Check it.
Be warned, it's so 80's it may give you a rat tail and/or mullet.

Juicy Fruit commercial

Freebase Dali 03-24-2009 12:38 AM

And then there's this guy:

Juicy Fail

Haha. I remember that ad. What's so disgusting about it though?

And there's no way that's from '81. It seems much more like the mid to late 80s to me.

Antonio 03-24-2009 12:43 AM

am i the only one who understood the chart?

The 80'sness of it, mostly.

But then again, they are talking about pulling out the stick and popping it your mouth. Combined with the 80'sness, it's a recipe for Nickelback's success.

BTW, I don't mean "disgusting" in the traditional sense. I mean shameful. Makes me hang my head in dissapointment and shame. lol.

Definitely a pretty retarded ad though not really different from a lot of ads from the time. What's the Nickleback connection here?

That song Nickelback has on the radio right now, something about "you look so much cuter with something in your mouth".
It reminds me of that juicy fruit commercial.

And that's never a good thing.

That's a pretty good example of why I only listen to the radio under the most desperate circumstances.

I usually echo that sentiment, but since all my music is currently in transit from Europe and car rides get ronely and I don't want to buy music I already have, the radio comes on.
It's the garlic to my vampire, but I gotta have something.

It's okay. That qualifies as "desperate circumstances".

It's gotta be more than that when I've listened, more than once, to Puddle Of Mud.

haha awesome though alot of the bands I like are in the middle, not sure if that's really bad though.

SATCHMO 03-24-2009 04:23 PM

I'm not an epert in this by any means but certain musical patterns and beats stimulate and supress certain brainwaves. Some brainwave stimulation id beneficial to the learning process and some is detrimental. Classical music has been considered great brain food for quite a while.

mr dave 03-24-2009 05:34 PM

so.... how is it that listening to beethoven makes you well over 100 points 'smarter' than everyone else, but listening to classical only gets you about 100 points from the bottom of the barrel?

lucifer_sam 03-24-2009 05:36 PM

i loled when i saw where "jazz" put you on the list. an entire fucking genre of music makes people perform that mediocre?

stupid thread is stupid.

I noticed that too, and thought it was ridiculous.

Surell 03-24-2009 11:29 PM

They did it for Rock and Rap too.

Janszoon 03-24-2009 11:36 PM

To be fair, it's like that because they're just going by what people most frequently wrote under the "favorite music" section on Facebook. The people who made the graphs were just copying and pasting data, it's not like they picked the artists and genres themselves.

Surell 03-24-2009 11:44 PM

Five smart people put Beethoven down, I guarantee it. Who the hell puts Beethoven down on their favorite music list?

The weird thing is Beethoven is the only classical composer on there. You'd think if one made into the top ten a couple would have.

Surell 03-25-2009 12:03 AM

I'm telling you, you got a ****load of people putting down the ones towards the bottom/middle and then you've got four chess prodigies putting down some Beethoven.

I think what you really have here is Beethoven being a semi-popular choice at the most prestigious of the schools they pulled the data from and not making the list at all with any of the lesser schools.

Surell 03-25-2009 12:12 AM

Does that mean they're only using higher up schools' data or am I reading this weird?

No, I think it's variety of different types of colleges.

Surell 03-25-2009 12:27 AM

It's too late for me to understand things, sorry about that.
