The last album Fugazi released (The Arguement, in 2001) charted at #6 on the independent charts in the US. I would argue they were popular during their time.

Adele and Sum 41 had songs that were actually popular among a wide audience, and I know **** all about Bon Iver but I imagine they likewise sell beyond just a niche nerd audience. No idea about Yes' popularity throughout the years though. I know prog had a brief period of popularity, but other than that...

So what you're saying, more or less, is that all the bands I just listed would be considered "popular." It doesn't matter if it was because of one song or not, they're popular.

The point is that at least some of them probably charted on more than just an independent chart.

I only mentioned what I mentioned because it was noted as "popular albums" but I wasn't entirely sure what the basis was for pinning them as "popular". It could easily be due to my own ignorance.
