Torrent speed
I currently have BitComet on my computer, not that I ever use it to get music... but if hypothetically speaking I was, does anyone know what I could do or download to make my torrents download faster?
Please and thanks to everyone! |
What's your connection speed?
I've used UTorrent on a standard DSL connection and, without modifying settings, downloaded at 450 kbps as a standard average. I can't imagine needing a faster average unless I was downloading multiple files, which, I don't recommend. Don't be greedy. Give 'er one at a time. |
Yeah, I do mutiple files and always discographies. Some download at about 100kps, but that's about the highest it gets. Usually it's between 20kps - 60kps.
|
Also consider the seeds and peers.
If a file you're downloading doesn't have a lot of peers seeding it, you don't have as many sources to download from. For example: If I tried searching for an obscure band that isn't hosted by many people and has very little seeds, I won't get the speed results compared to a download that does. |

There are ways to maximise ports size, but most of the time this shouldn't be an issue... For the more obscure stuff, chances are you'll get it faster via blogs... Unless it has dedicated seeders (As most Invite torrent sites will) |

Demonoid is invite only and it's only one invite per user and I've already invited someone.
Another trick is to limit your upload speed to the lowest possible while it's downloading. |
Yes, but as far as I know they've already invited someone. The thing a lot of people don't really understand about demonoid is that it's a very dedicated community. You are expected to upload torrents and that site mainly deals with discographies, a lot of people just go there and leech and then they eventually get booted off because they do keep track of your download to upload ratio.

My Bitcomet's listen port has been blocked by something apparently.
Edit: Unblocked the UPnP Framework in Windows Firewall. No change. |
Have you checked to see if there's a tweak guide for the program?
Try this first: Basic Bitcomet tweak guide Then if that doesn't do ya, do like I did and use google to find a more complete guide. |

Are you on DSL? |

20 - 60kps. I would need to wait until she got home, ask her to use her computer, find what the house router is, and then find a way to unblock Bitcomet. |

In your Bitcomet prog, is there a way to look for open ports? |

Yea, if I were you, I'd see if I could wrestle the direct connection from her and give her the wireless hookup. You'll definitely benefit where speed is concerned. |

then after that go buy a damn cd. |
The highest I ever get is like 165kps...that's like the max of my internet I think.
Also, don't go on YouTube or anything that takes up bandwidth while downloading. But how come Demonoid is private? Like, wouldn't it help if there were more people instead of less? |

Yeah, but seeding leads to getting caught doesn't it?
|

Which, when you look at it, I guess you're right in a certain aspect. |
Yeah, I know that seeding is like the foundation of torrents, but spending the least amount of time in a torrent program is probably the safest.
|
It's not like the RIAA is going to individually track down your IP.
Also, your top speed was 165? You probably aren't getting the right torrents. Always aim for the ones with the most seeds. My highest speed was 1200kb/s iirc. |
Then how do people get caught?
And when I downloaded something with like 12000 seeds and like 500 leechers, it was still only 165. I have DSL? |

^Thank you two for a hilarious argument.

Okay now I need someone who knows what they are talking about! Verdical Fiction, if that's you, please help: "Almost all wireless connections of whatever sort, include a firewall to block unsolicited incoming connections. For most things this is goodness but it blocks P2P. Usually there's nothing you can do about it except change to a different sort of connection, usually from a different ISP."
Okay, so I believe I'm connected to Internet through the Router on my step-dad's computer (not my moms). So, even if I somehow figure out which firewall he has on the computer (which I don't know how to tell), so I can get the instructions from Portforward to free the Bitcomet listen port on the Linksys Router WRT54G2 (which he has), and then follow said instructions and complete my task (when he gets home in an hour), will my wireless connection still block unsolicited incoming connections by itself, effectively keeping my downloads at 20kps - 60kps (where it has been averaging). |
|
1 in every 3,679 users (apprx.) will be sued by RIAA. Damn, I hope I don't get sued.

But for what it's worth, that 1 to 600 billion figure you threw out there sure was hilarious. |
**** yeah i fixed my listen port from my computer!!!
