I think that either the elderly becoming more conservative as they age or the perception that they do gives people the idea that older conservatives are wise and older leftists are still mentally young buffoons. I was just watching some old leftist guy on Youtube saying leftist things that weren't any different from anything I'd say or some other young leftist would say and since I didn't know anything about the guy I didn't have any assumption of intelligence that I would for someone like Noam Chomsky and I got the impression that the dude was wishy washy.
There was literally no reason that I could pinpoint to make me think this, it was just that he was a random old guy who wasn't a gruff, tough love grandpa type spouting right wing rhetoric. Even old people spouting obvious right wing dogma don't make me think this as it just seems right and proper that an old person would do that and so it's "normal" rather than "not normal".
I have no in-depth analysis of this, it's just something I noticed and never quite put together in my head. Might be just me being surrounded by older conservatives though.
