You think? I mean, there was little to no bass in the album but the songwriting was there. I'd go with Reload as their first really bad record. Though The Black Album and Load come close.

Definitely The Black Album. Justice is pretty great.

I'd agree about Justice. I used to go jogging and that album was a mainstay for that (along with the Who's 'Live at Leeds'). I'm not a fan of The Black Album - but I think it was only mediocre by the standards Metallica had set for themselves by that point. Many Metallica fans were also disappointed by the obvious reaches for mainstream appeal in that album, and I get that.

Black Album is too ****ing long and the thrash light meets hard rock combo is bland and tedious as **** for a lot of those songs cause they're none too short. The overplay factor doesn't help either. I'd probably like "Enter Sandman" a lot more if I hadn't heard it fifty million times on the radio by the time I left high school.

You'll find no disagreement from me on those points. The Black Album is to Metallica what Back in Black is to AC/DC.
