In your start menu:
Your Microphone should be Enabled, Mute should not be checked, and your Microphone level should be all the way up. I think I remember something about a boost setting, but I wouldn't worry about that for testing purposes. If I can't resolve this tonight, then tomorrow I'll be able to explore the issue on Vista at school and I can log in to let you know what I come up with. |

Is there a Mac equivalent to Windows' Add/Remove and De-fragmentation ?
|
As far as im aware there are programs you can download to de-frag a mac's hard drive. Someone who actually knows jack about mac's may be able to point you in the right direction or suggest a possible easier solution.
As for add/remove programs, don't you just drag programs into the trash can/recycle bin? |

iPod does not appear in iTunes or iPod updater in Mac OS X If you don't get dice with this, Janszoon may be able to help you properly, as he is versed in that OS, and I'm a Windows guy. Let us know how it goes. GL. |
Well I guess it was as easy as a simple restart. Thanks for your time Freebase.

I'm here... what did I miss?
|
Everything is well but I now know who to track down should I run into mac problems.

Jans... You must teach me your Mac ways. Even my major won't dare venture into Mac territory. It's like a conspiracy. :/ |
Hey you hunted down links. That's more than I could ask for right there. So thanks again. You're beautiful, never change.

My Dell Laptop is slow, the internet runs slowly and loads slowly, sometimes it randomly freezes on me.
It's two years new, but it was hardly used before a few months ago. It was still in the case when my uncle gave it to me. The virus scan runs clear. The computer is about 52% full, space wise. I don't have a lot of programs running at the same time. I notice that when my roommate is on her Mac, everything is extremely quick, and we're on the same internet network. I'm not sure if it's the different computers we have, or what. I know I'm not giving enough information, and if there's something else I can give you, I'm sure I could. Anything? |
I had some few tips for that, but now that I'm on mac I forgot all the names of things in Windows, it's a bit pathetic :( But I had the same problem, you should clean up all useless things.
And I remember mine would extremely run slow when I would have a lot of apps in the bar that I forgot how it's named [in the corner next to the clock]. |
I've tried that. I closed almost everything once and kept ONE program open. I don't know what's wrong.
It's an inspiron 1721, by the way. I don't know if that changes anything. |

I know. I right-clicked and exited(sp?) out of everything but my scanner and such.

Difragmentation can be helpful, or in the system manager window, the second tab, you can control what the system is working on [windows have a tendency to work on unused applications]

Try running defrag on your drives, and search around for a free registry cleaner online and run that. Also get a spyware removal tool like Adaware and run that. You can also disable a lot of background services that run by default, using up available RAM, that you don't actually need. Depending on your operating system, there are guides available on the internet that can walk you through which services you can safely disable. Also, increasing your page-file, which uses storage on your hard-drive as temporary virtual memory, can also take the load off your RAM demand. There are plenty walk-throughs for that available on the web. Doing all of the above, you should notice a performance increase if any - or a combination of the factors addressed above - are contributing to the performance problems you're experiencing. How much RAM does your computer have? And what speed processor? If you're comparing your computer's speed against another, it may generally just be a matter of your computer not having as much RAM and processing power as the one you're comparing to. Try to use the basis of your performance decrease as a comparison to how fast your computer was when you first got it, compared to how fast it is now. If there's a general downslope of performance as time passes, then chances are you just need to do some cleaning up. But either way, your computer won't become faster than it's capable of being, as it's limited by the hardware components unique to your configuration. |
Mm, how do I find my RAM and speed processor?
And thank you. |
Right click My Computer - properties.
Should tell you how much RAM you have and what processor you have installed. EDIT: As so http://www.cape.k12.mo.us/technology...ComputerID.jpg Also, if you get Adaware i would get something like Spybot too, and run both of them. |
my msn freezes about every 10-15minutes, doesnt let me speak to anyone or anything, then after 2minutes it unfreezes. how that ? its so annoyin, i would be grateful if you could help! :D

Also, what is the nature of the freeze... are buttons clickable? Or is it just in the actual communication of messages? Have you checked to see if your internet connection is still operable during these freezes? |

the freeze is like i can operate everything else except my msn, and the internet connection stays online. |

Oh, I'm an idiot, the information is right there. I was looking at the right thing. I just have Vista, so it wasn't in the same place.
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor TK-55 180 GHz Memory (RAM): 1.00 GB |
Quote:
What version do you have? (You should be able to check this by going to "help" then "about" in the messenger interface.) |
Quote:
Vista uses A LOT of RAM just to operate, so the free RAM available to any programs you're running is a lot more limited than an XP scenario. |
What stick, exactly?
I'm sorry. >.< |
Quote:
CPUID and download the 64bit version (I'm assuming you're running Vista 64, from the info you gave about your processor), unzip the file and run the CPU-Z.exe It will give you your RAM type, along with other data. Ideally, you'll want to buy a matching stick, but the important thing is TYPE and SIZE. If you have one 1gig stick, you need to buy one 1gig stick to match it. If your current RAM is, say DDR3, then the stick you buy needs to be DDR3 as well. If you can get the same name-brand, fine, but it's not necessary. Once you buy the stick, you'll need to install it, so at that point you can simply google "step by step install RAM" and include what type of computer you have, whether it's a laptop or desktop. The installation process isn't hard.. it's simply a matter of plugging it in and turning on your computer. |
And that could be the reason it's running slowly?
|
Of course, I just remembered last year's computer course I took. Our teacher told us then that a Vista needs an approximate Gig alone to run itself.
