If you're using XP, there's a Microsoft KB article that addresses your problem.
Several dialog boxes are blank (and the WMP error)

That should get you sorted.

thanks a ton. i don't understand the bolded part though:

Quote:
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK.
3. Click Expand File.
4. In the File to restore box, type the name of the file that you want to restore.
5. In the Restore from box, type the path of the Windows XP .cab file where you want to restore the file, or click Browse From to locate the Windows XP .cab file.

Note The Windows XP .cab files are stored in the I386 folder on the Windows XP CD.
6. In the Save file in box, type the path where you want to extract the new file, or click Browse To to locate the folder that you want.

7. Click Expand.
8. In the System Configuration Utility dialog box, click OK. If you are prompted to restart the computer, click Restart.
i assume the file i want to restore is jscript.dll (which i still have, i checked, i guess maybe its damaged then), but the rest i don't get. what is a .cab file?

Yo... I'll just say my problem's fixed Found some long ass list of steps to "cleanly uninstall" it, took about 40 minutes, but it worked.

A .cab file is basically a compressed archive that holds a lot of files Windows uses when it's being installed. The '.cab' refers to the file extension. Being that the .cab files are located on the Windows install CD, you'll have to insert the XP install CD in your CD drive and navigate to i386 and select the .cab file as the source from which you'll be restoring your jscript.dll file.

So:
- You'll type 'jscript.dll' in the File To Restore box
- In the Restore From box, you'll click the Browse button then navigate to your CD rom, then i386, then the .cab file. Double clicking it should put the path of the .cab file into the Restore From box.
- Continue with the rest of the instructions.

If you don't have your XP install disk, you can download jscript.dll from jscript.dll free download - DLL-files.com

If you go that route, simply place the file somewhere on your C: drive and use that location as the Restore From path.

Let me know if that sorts you out.

thanks for all the help. it turns out though that there are even more problems on this computer - which is a family computer - than i thought, so we're going to do this repair thing from the XP cd that will hopefully fix it all; since it refuses to system restore.

Ouch. Any idea on what the new problems are?
I assume you mean XP's recovery console on the CD for the repairs right? Is the computer unable to start at all? Usually you'd use the recovery console only if you're not able to start up your computer via normal startup or in safe mode. Typically the things you'll use the recovery console are to replace system files with recovery system files in the windows recovery folder, or modify files in particular ways.

If you don't mind, I'd love to offer some help in regards to your problem. The least I could do is point you in the right direction.

@ FD, as you obviously noticed my extremely distracting, annoying Bold shoutbox font, I really need a way to get rid of this thing.

I tried clicking the [B] button, and it's obviously not the reason of the boldness, as I never clicked it, nor there's a star in it (showing that it's clicked), nor does my font get back to the standardized form when I refresh the page.

I went to the Internet Browser preferences, and the default font there isn't set to Bold. I opened the forum with a different Browser, and the Bold was gone. So it's surely a problem from here (can't use the other browser as, Safari sucks).

So is there any other reason that may cause that thing, so I can at least check?

Have you tried to change all your shoutbox font settings, testing them, then changing them back to default?
If not, try to change each option all at once... aka, enbolden, underline, italicize, change the font color, and the font face. Then write something in the shoutbox. It should reflect your changes. If it does, change everything back to default and use a font face that is not bold in form.
If it doesn't reflect those changes, then your browser simply isn't translating the shoutbox font changes anymore.
If that's the case, I'll need to know what browser you're using in order for me to troubleshoot further. And please don't say Internet Exploder.

Ok, seems like the 'bold' part is gone, but the B|I|U buttons don't work much on all fonts. Well, I'll only be using that standard normal face one, so not bothered for now.

btw I use Opera, and of course not IE.
