Here's a fun one. I was trying to get rid of AdWare by deleting it from the registry. Whatever I did, Windows Explorer (not internet explorer) seems to not work.
The weird thing is though, my desk top still works as a base of operations for files. Also, if I go to save something somewhere, I have full access to all the folders and programs that reference folders (e.g. iTunes) but not if I attempt to get there via Windows explorer. When I click on a folder on the desktop it says "C:\Users\Brow\Desktop\Files No such interface supported" And of all the weird things, I can't save files from Paint (screenshots). I'm thinking I'll just scrap the thing and grab a new system. Thoughts? |

If you did, then restore to it, then follow these steps: How to Clean Up a Windows Spyware Infestation ...and you should be all good. The link is for older OS's (XP), but I still use the tools it references for Vista, 7, & 8 with sufficient results. |
My computer is pissing me off.
I wasn't sure where to post this but I have this weird issue with my computer lately where it will tell me that I've unplugged my headphones when they've remained plugged in, or that I've plugged them in when they've been in the whole time, thus resulting in sound issues.
Does anyone know why this might happen? |
Check to see if your soundcard has driver updates.. or maybe the headphone wire is ****ting out and not being recognized.
Do you still get sound from the headphones when it says they aren't plugged in? |

I'm not amazing with computers but I would def start by checking the soundcard drivers and the device driver to see if your headphones are being recognized when they aren't working.
Also, if you have a ****ty pair laying around try those.. If you don't you can find some old walkman style headphones at walmart or something for cheap just to test and than return them when your done. Quote:

My family got a Toshiba Satellite C55D-A recently, and this brand new computer runs great...save for the extremely slow wireless internet. It has Windows 8 on it, and poking around on forums discussing a similar issue most people say that they change their transmit level settings. I haven't been able to find this in the control panel or anything even following their instructions that they've posted. The wifi isn't the issue since it works fine on everyone's phones and on the Wii (we use it for Netflix). Does anyone know how I can change this setting or if there's another way to fix this dial-up speed internet.

i have a Panasonic smart tv with a Panasonic blue ray....i bought them about a year ago and payed for set up which included a LAN line going to both devices....
i've honestly never really used the internet features on either device save screwing around with it when i first got it....i just find using my laptop easier today i subscribed to HuluPlus for access to their 800+ Criterion film collection i was not able to activate the TV itself but was able to activate the Blue Ray....which is fine as it has the priority line out of the router but it is choppy as fuck...like every 2 seconds i'm updating the firmware on the blu ray....any other suggestions? |
you could go to the router settings, and set up port forwarding for the blue ray player?

stable 64 bit versions of chrome and chromium are available now, if those are anyone's browser of choice

Been having a lot of troubles streaming video or audio lately.
I always get the same error message, something about the script taking to long to respond. It's driving me crazy. Trying to stream TV shows on Amazon is a friggin nightmare of stuttering, out-of-sync hell. Anyone know what could be the problem? |
what browser is this happening in?
|
firefox
:\ |
someone else could probably give you better advice than i can, but i'd make sure firefox and flash/silverlight (whichever you use) are both updated (if you haven't done so already). maybe check which add-ons are running in firefox and disable what's unnecessary, or clear your browser history/cache. even scanning with something like malwarebytes, if you'd like to, wouldn't hurt.
here are some additional tips that might help, and this amazon article could be useful |
I posted this earlier in the plug thread:
I got this message from Plug does anyone know what it means? Quote:

Idk about that stuff you posted but I would do what bulbasaur said in the plug thread and check your web browser extensions to see if there is some conflict going on. I can probably help with that part of it if you can't figure it out on your own but beyond that I have no clue. Sorry bud.

is there a way to take youtube videos and burn them to a dvd?
i know there are programs for the audio....but i just found several very rare concerts of Coil and i would very much like to be able to watch them in proper format |

Be aware though (as I'm sure you are) that all YouTube videos and the like are in SWF (Shockwave) or FLV (Flash) format, and most DVD players will not recognise them. You'll have to convert them to AVI or MPEG otherwise it's likely your DVD will just say something like "Unsupported format" or maybe not just see them at all.
|
thanks guys....i found a great converter program and have started converting the 16 videos :)

So I'm having a lot of trouble streaming videos lately. It used to just be Amazon so I figured it must be something to do with them but nope, now it's any streaming anywhere. Hulu doesn't work. Youtube doesn't work. Pandora doesn't work. Plug doesn't work (but when does it ever anyways?). I'm getting frustrated because everything else about my computer is okay. It's a little laggier than normal on regular browsers but nothing extreme. I scanned it recently, no viruses. Cleaned the disks, defragged, etc. It's all gravy baby but that streaming is just a no-go. Anyone have any suggestions or ideas about what could be wrong?
|
What is the problem with the stream? The video won't play? It keeps pausing to buffer? Usually with streams it's an internet issue more than a computer one.
|
Both.
But that's the thing though, everything else online is okay. But videos? Constant buffering. Or, it just won't play. Or, it'll play but it'll be super choppy. Or, it'll play the audio but not the video or the video and not the audio or they're slightly out of sync or one's choppy and the other's not. It's entirely frustrating but I think you're right- I've probably just got a crap connection. |
Viruses are one thing, but what about spyware? Or malware? Have you checked for those? Virus checker often miss them.
Also, what's the load like on your CPU? What percentage memory have you and what's using the most (usually the browser, but if you happen to have two open, that could be a thing...) |
I have trend anti-virus... I'm not sure how to check for malware or spyware. When it's lagging while trying to stream the CPU goes to 100% but the processes in task manager add up to about 40%. It's all chrome.
|
Download a free version of Ad-aware and run the scan. Should clean up a lot of spy/malware.
|
Yeah, or Spyhunter or Malwarebytes. Any of them are good.
When you have task manager open (apologies if you know how to do this already but just in case) click the top of the processes tab and it will reorganise , if it's not already done, the memory in terms of highest to lowest so you can see what's using up the most memory and resources. You can then choose to click that process or those processes and hit "end task" which may give you a little more memory. Does sound like malware or spyware though. |
I've heard that using more than one 'internet protection service' or whatever can cause problems though and may result in one or both no longer working- do I have that wrong?

1. Uninstall any unwanted programs (including installed anti-virus and malware programs), as well as clean out browsing history, and unwanted temp files. 2. Make sure you're clean from any virus. Follow these instructions (it's older, but still relevant): How to Clean Up a Windows Spyware Infestation You'll need these: http://download.sysinternals.com/fil...ssExplorer.zip http://download.sysinternals.com/files/Autoruns.zip 3. Download and run a full scan with a malware/spyware cleaner similar to (or this one): https://www.malwarebytes.org/mwb-download/ 4. Download and DO A BOOT TIME SCAN using any free anti-virus software. I've had some success with AVG, and MS Essentials in the past. Microsoft Security Essentials - Microsoft Windows. You can uninstall this if it's taking up resources once all is said and done. Just stay off the gaming/porn sites. 5. Run through #2 one more time. 6. If clean, defrag the drive. If not, repeat steps 2 through 4 until it is, then defrag it. This will take some time, and I've had a lot of success with this (at work, and friends PC's), although once in a while it takes some investigating into a certain malicious file. Regedit's come into play when that happens, and I wouldn't recommend doing any unless you know whats what. If this doesn't solve your buffering problem though, I'd check my connection speed and make sure it matches up with what I'm paying for. Although it could be that your connection speed just sucks. As a last resort, check to see if your neighbors are steeling your bandwidth. If they are, go kick some ass. At any rate, you'll have a clean, faster PC. |
Trend happened to have add-ons that look for both all the other stuff mentioned- nothing turned up. Although I'm not sure one of the addons worked all the way. In the how-to's example picture the list of file types scanned was a bit longer... maybe it was just out of date. IDK. But nothin's turned up so... I'm guessing it's a connection issue. I'm gonna try my luck with hopin on a better wifi connection. I don't pay the internet bill so I'm basically leeching my landlord's internet info atm. Never had an issue before though which is the weird thing.

Carry on then. |
have you switched from firefox to chrome since your initial post about these problems, wd? you were using firefox if i remember correctly, but i'm guessing switching browsers didn't help much.
you could run an internet speed test to give everyone in here who's trying to help an idea of what kind of connection speed you're working with. maybe also give them an idea as to what's going on under chrome://extensions (paste it in chrome's address bar). check to see if any conflicts are listed under chrome://conflicts if you'd like. also, what operating system are you using anyway? |
It did at first but not anymore.
I've got a ping of 23ms, a DL speed of 2.79mbps per second, an upload of .47mbps, and no idea what any of that means. No conflicts. Windows 7 64bit OS. |
