Sleeeeping Patterns

If somebody has already had the creative genius idea of already making a thread like this, then merge, i unfortunately cannot be bum'old to search, sorry.

Anyway, i have 2 days off a week. On these days off i sleep in till like 3pm WITHOUT FAIL, consciously spurning any plans i have in order to bask in the sanguine solace of my bed. However, i then cant sleep that night till like 4am, aware of the fact i have to be up at 6am to go to my stop-gap sh!t of a job. I'm literally like a zombie for the rest of the day, irritable and nonreactive to pretty much everything.

Cue inane threads like these to rid me of the boredom that plagues me when im not out.

Anybody else stupid enough to do this?

Akira 12-02-2009 07:32 PM

I have hypersomnia, which is very annoying, unless I dont have anything to do the next day.

At the moment I am not at work this week. This has involved me going to bed around 3am, falling asleep around 5/6 and getting up at 3pm. The tricky thing is when I have to work or do something else, that's when the zombie state kicks in. Fortunately I'm used to having 2-4 hours sleep and then working a full day when I have to.

Not nice at all.

NumberNineDream 12-02-2009 07:36 PM

I prefer staying awake for the next day then trying to sleep for few hours and waking up grumpy. I've been staying awake once every two days, and it gets a bit ridiculous in the morning when I have to drive to Uni. The problem is, I'm only active at nights, so makes coping with the "day" world very difficult.

Sneer 12-02-2009 07:38 PM

I cant get used to it, no matter how often it happens, i'm the worst person to be around on earth if i dont get at least 5 hours. Still doesnt stop me doing it though.

Neapolitan 12-02-2009 07:54 PM

I go through periods of hyposomnia and hypersomnia, and I shift work that alternates between mornings and evenings, which doesn't help. I know I couldn't go on with two hours of sleep that would kill me. I don't have any advice I just know it's a grind.

NumberNineDream 12-02-2009 07:57 PM

It's usually people being annoyed at me cause I don't sleep or cause I sleep too much.
I slept today for 20 hours.

lucifer_sam 12-02-2009 10:35 PM

i have difficulty falling asleep almost every night, i try to get to bed by one or two but i still have to get up at eight every morning. i usually don't lapse consciousness until three or four and i rarely if ever sleep all the way through. as a result i tend to doze off during class and i spend long periods of time zoned out of my fucking mind. it's like i'm perpetually tired, but i can't find a way to recover.

i almost wish it had something to do with my habits, but i exercise and eat better than most.

Arya Stark 12-02-2009 10:39 PM

I usually stay up the latest when I know I have something to do and intend to do it, but instead get distracted with something more amusing.
I should be sleeping right now.
But I had to write a paper.
But there's EASY MAC next to me. So I made it.
And then I watched old videos of my marching band.
And it was great.
And I have to write this paper.
There's only a paragraph left and I'm procrastinating, guys.

SATCHMO 12-02-2009 11:13 PM

Only somewhat related, but I ran across this the other day and I think it's pretty neat:

Relaxing music, sleep-aids, anxiety reduction, relaxation tools

Astronomer 12-03-2009 12:02 AM

I also get really ****ed up sleeping patterns like that Stu... when I'm on teaching rounds I am just absolutely drained by the end of the day that I just come home, do my lesson plans for the next day, and then just crash and fall asleep straight away because I'm so exhausted. Which is great. But then when I'm not on teaching rounds and I have the pleasure of experiencing being able to sleep-in later than 6.30am and not having copious amounts of work to do, I get really lazy, sleep-in, and then can't get to sleep until really late at night.

Damn body clocks.

I'm in exactly the same boat, right now.
What I usually do is take a crapload of benadryl and put on a boring movie.
Unfortunately for me, while there are certainly no shortages of boring movies, I'm fresh out of Benadryl. :(

GuitarBizarre 12-03-2009 01:46 AM

My sleepin patterns are ****ed up, depending on how I feel I can do pretty much anything.

If I'm depressed and have nothing to do I can and will stay in bed for hours upon hours longer than needed. If I'm not, I still sleep a long time, but on the same token, If I wake up at 10pm, I will more often than not still be awake at 5AM.

If I pull a day without much sleep, then I can easily crash for 16 hours of sleep straight, and in one instance I pulled an all nighter and a half, was awake for the entirety of two long days, and managed to subsequently sleep for exactly 24 hours, and suddenly get very confused as to the date and what had actually happened.

Unfortunately with work and so on this means often I'll be working on 2 hours sleep, and whenever I do that my brain dies a death and I quite literally have trouble remembering what day of the week it is and what happened 3 hours ago. I once spent half an hour searching a classroom for my iPod, CONVINCED I'd brought it in with me, only to give up and go back home to find it on my bed. Turned out my trip home to put it on my bed hadn't happened the day before, but THAT MORNING.

noise 12-03-2009 01:51 AM

i was like this, especially in grad school. i worked late (till 2am or so) and would often stay up to see the sun rise, then sleep well past noon the next day. it was debilitating.

then as soon as i hit 30, i lost the ability to sleep in. now, i literally wake up at 6:00 every morning, no matter when i go to bet. even on weekends. it's insane.

loveissucide 12-03-2009 07:00 AM

I can't lose consciousness till 3 or 4 most times, and struggle to get up before noon and feel like I'm dieing when I do.It's destroying my mind and body, and I have no idea what it stems from.

I'm not implying anything, but if you don't get a lot of exersize during the day, it can have a negative impact on your ability to fall asleep quickly and get good rest at night.
Your daily diet can also contribute to this.

:)

I know my diet and exercise habits leave a lot to be desired, but even during the summer when I was being stuffed to the gills at mealtimes and walking/playing football for an hour a day I still had huge trouble sleeping.:(

OceanAndSilence 12-03-2009 09:03 AM

every now and again i'll lose a "good" sleeping pattern, whether it be because i pull an all nighter, or for any other reason...

if you know that you need to get up early on the next day, just do an activity that will make you tired; exercise a lot, or you know, as a last ditch effort, get drunk/high.

and also, don't eat a lot before sleeping, especially if the food contains sugar/caffeine. it just screws you over.

Arya Stark 12-03-2009 09:06 AM

Uhhm. Skipped my first class. xD
Fail.
At least I handed in the essay.

NSW 12-03-2009 09:14 AM

Sometimes I wish there was an "off" switch that kept my brain from going 100 miles a minute when I lay down to sleep. The past few nights I've hit the sack around 11 pm and laid there until 2-3 am.

I know exactly what you mean.
It's gotten to the point sometimes that I have to wake up and write everything I'm thinking about just so I don't have to think about it anymore.
My friend always told me to just think about your breathing.
Literally tell yourself, "Inhale, Exhale, Inhale, Exhale."
It works a little bit for me if it isn't one of those nights something's really bothering me and I can't help but think about it.

Sneer 12-03-2009 10:19 AM

A little update for the squadrons of you busting bollock to find out how my sleep-deprived day went, i ended up getting an hour and a half's sleep, sat in traffic on a bus for about an hour to get to a place normally 20 mins away, literally sat in the lab all day staring into space, then getting on the bus to go home and falling asleep for the entire journey (i HATE sleeping on public transport). I now cant go out to a show tonight because i'm literally struggling to keep my eyes open. Guarantee i'll be knocked out by 10pm. FML.

This...

It's the reason why I'm a sleepaphobe

Urban Hat€monger ? 12-03-2009 01:33 PM

A day is too short.

If a day was 30 hours long my sleeping patterns would be perfect.

BTown 12-03-2009 01:39 PM

I do this ALL the time. On weekends me and my friends will normally hang out ntil around 3 or 4 am and wake up around 12. Usually if we do this on a friday we will do the same that saturday and I always use sundays to recover and usually sleep most of the day and end up waking up at like 8.

I actually looked into this because it was such a pain in the ass having to function in school with no sleep and I found that getting 4 hours of sleep is more beneficial than 5 hours, although 8 is the recommended amount as most of you know, so usually if I can't get close to 8 I'll just hang out until its about 4 hours away form when I wake up.

NumberNineDream 12-03-2009 01:44 PM

^ I always recommend 4.
Good it doesn't only work on me.

Sneer 12-03-2009 01:45 PM

How does that work? Surely the closer you get to 8 hours the better it is for your functionality.

NumberNineDream 12-03-2009 01:48 PM

When you sleep for 4 hours and wake up, it has the effect of the afternoon energy naps. When you sleep a bit more, you'll surely wake up tired.
Unless you're a morning person, but I was never able to wake up relaxed.

Akira 12-03-2009 01:49 PM

The whole needing 8 hours sleep a night is a load of bollox.

BTown 12-03-2009 01:50 PM

It's all about what time your body is ready to wake up, when you sleep I'm pretty sure your body goes through a cycle and its better to stop around 4 hours than 5, 6, or 7.

storymilo 12-03-2009 01:51 PM

The night before Thanksgiving I went to bed at 5:30 A.M.:( Then I slept in till 3 and did nothing the whole day.... then proceedingly went to bed at 3 he next night. So yeah my sleeping pattern is a mess.

I'll share a special experience with yall though. The first time I got one musicbanter and actually posted something was when I was at a friend's house and was the only one awake at 6:30 A.M. (Yes I had stayed up the whole night on my own:o:)

BTown 12-03-2009 02:16 PM

^ I actually found this place around 3 am one night too.

jackhammer 12-03-2009 03:05 PM

I have two patterns. When I was working I was going to bed anytime between 12 and 3 am and then getting up at 7:30 am, with a lie in on Sunday until about ten am. No napping during the day and maybe an 'early' night once a week which would be 11-12 am.

Since not working I usually go to bed around 2-3 am but still get up at 7:30 am but if I get alone time in the mornings I will grab an hour on the sofa. Weekends I get up around 10:30 am. I generally sleep quite well unless I haven't had a drink hehe, yes I do use it to help me sleep but I know a few people who are the same.

I have never fallen asleep on public transport or on a night's out drinking, in fact I would be embarrassed if that happened. If you are doing this or needing like 10 hours+ sleep all the time then you A) Need to get a good diet and take a walk or B) have no damn stamina ;)

FETCHER. 12-03-2009 05:18 PM

I go to sleep at like roughly 3am, and have been waking up naturally at 1pm. This morning my brother woke me up at 11am, I thought I was going to die.

The other night I fell asleep at 7pm from a previous night of binge'n I woke up at 9am the next morning.

VeggieLover 12-03-2009 05:22 PM

OH man, I can sleep anytime, anywhere. I let myself relax for 5 minutes and I'll be out. I don't always feel tired cuz im distracted and busy but like now for instance, im having trouble keeping my eyes open and i still have Worship team practice and Dance practice and wont be home till around 9:30 and then still have to do my homework. I should be doing it now but meh.
Usually go to bed between 11 and midnight, wake up at 6ish on weekdays and whenever i have to be somewhere on weekends (andwhere from 7am to 2pm)
I basically got no sleep this week, stayed up for around 37 cuz i just had to finish my work and go to all my activities...and then one night i just stayed up til around 4 cuz i didn't feel like going to bed even though i was tired. Idk, f-ed up.

I need lots of sleep and im just not getting it. I usually do best with around 9.5 hours a night.

FETCHER. 12-08-2009 01:30 PM

The longest I've been up is probably 21hrs, I've never stayed up for more than that cos it would **** my sleeping pattern up even more. I probably am at my best with 9/10 hrs sleep. But I can survive on as little as 5hrs and still be alright, just knackered and zombie like. :)

simplephysics 12-08-2009 01:34 PM

I'm usually in bed around 1 on the weekdays, and almost always wake up, fully alert around 5:30 - 6, tell myself it's too early, and then fall back asleep for a few more hours and wake up more exhausted than before. I blame my warm, snuggly, comfortable bed.

Sneer 12-08-2009 01:38 PM

My bed isnt even snug, i sleep in a caravan (not through choice or poverty) and it can be so horrendously uncomfortable. I think duvet + pillow = win in any setting, apart from settings where it wouldnt equal win, such as the bedroom of Moira Hindley.

Arya Stark 12-08-2009 01:58 PM

I have hardly been sleeping. This is so bad.

pourmeanother 12-08-2009 04:25 PM

I stayed up till 6am back-to-back nights finishing homework. My normal sleep time is around 3-4am. My future career needs to revolve around that kind of schedule: nighttime covert ops, club owner, prostitute. I'd be a bouncer but I don't satisfy the prerequisite--being a total douche. I'm just partially douchey.
